At Sunnybrook, our vision is to invent the future of health care.

About us

From our beginnings as a hospital for Canadian veterans, Sunnybrook has flourished into a fully affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto, evolving to meet the needs of our growing community. Today, with 1.3 million patient visits each year, Sunnybrook has established itself across three campuses and is home to Canada's largest trauma centre. Sunnybrook's groundbreaking research changes the way patients are treated around the world. Our over 200 scientists and clinician-scientists conduct more than $100 million of breakthrough research each year. Tomorrow, we will discover ways to treat the untreatable. Our mission is to care for our patients and their families when it matters most. Our vision is to invent the future of health care. Our values are: excellence, collaboration, accountability, respect and engagement. See Sunnybrook's ambitious plan to invent the future of health care: sunnybrook.ca/strategicplan

  • Next week, in honour of World AIDS Day, we will be hosting An Afternoon of Art for Hope and Remembrance – an art auction to raise funds for the Anita Rachlis Clinic. For more than 36 years, the Anita Rachlis Clinic – one of Toronto’s first HIV clinics – has provided life-changing care and support to thousands of patients and families. At the event, we will auction off a triptych – a piece of art that includes three beautiful paintings of Georgian Bay pine trees – in honour of the clinic’s legacy. All members of the public are invited to attend the art auction, listen to stories from patients and their families, enjoy light refreshment, live music and a prize draw. Learn more about the art auction, how to bid online and the work of the Anita Rachlis Clinic: https://ow.ly/NAma50Xx8BH

  • David Poynton's gift to Sunnybrook honours his late parents, Jack and Judy Poynton, who proudly dedicated over 70 years to Sunnybrook as volunteers. After visiting his family cemetery in Perth, Ontario, David uncovered a history of ancestors who served as Veterans, educators, and community volunteers. This legacy of service inspired him to establish the Jack and Judy Poynton Volunteer Resources Fund at Sunnybrook. Read David's full story: https://ow.ly/xpw450Xw0uH

  • Ten years ago, Sunnybrook researchers made history when they combined focused ultrasound and microbubbles – a novel technique they invented – to non-invasively open the blood-brain barrier for the first time in a patient. Now, the results of a new study published in The Lancet Oncology, co-led by Sunnybrook, shows the technique can be used safely and effectively, aiding medication delivery to the brain in patients with glioblastoma, and demonstrating a 40 per cent increase in survival time. “This is the first time we have been able to demonstrate a potential survival benefit from using microbubble-enhanced focused ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to improve delivery of chemotherapy to the tumour site in patients with brain cancer,” says Dr. Nir Lipsman, senior investigator of the multi-site clinical trial and one of the neurosurgeons at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre to lead the world-first technique over a decade ago. “These findings suggest we may have found a possible solution to bypassing the blood brain barrier, which is important not only for advancing treatments for brain cancers, but other devastating conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and ALS.” Read more about the results of the study: https://ow.ly/JbzZ50XxA6H

  • Earlier this month, we hosted our fourth annual Feast for the Ancestors.  The ceremony is an opportunity to honour and connect with our ancestors around a sacred fire. It’s also a way to express gratitude to our ancestors for their guidance and to show respect for those who have supported us throughout our lives.  The Feast for the Ancestors is an important tradition as it brings the community together, providing Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples the opportunity to connect and build a stronger sense of unity. • A Canada first! 🇨🇦 This week, Sunnybrook became the first hospital in Canada to take part in a focused surgical verification process through the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Through meetings, the ACS reviewer accessed all aspects of our surgical program with a focus on orthopaedics and neurosurgery. In the coming months, the reviewer will provide an in-depth assessment with recommendations to find, fix and prevent problems, helping guide our ongoing work to achieve the best care outcomes. Thank you to everyone in our Integrated Surgical Program for preparing for this review and for your continued commitment to improving patient care.
