Sunnybrook honours spirits with fourth annual Feast for the Ancestors
Last week, Sunnybrook hosted our fourth annual Feast for the Ancestors. The ceremony, led by Leonard Benoit, Indigenous Health and Partnerships Lead, is an opportunity for participants to honour and connect with their ancestors around a sacred fire.
The ceremony is also a way to express gratitude to our ancestors for their guidance, to show respect for those who have supported us throughout our lives, and to maintain a connection between the living and the spirit world.
During the ceremony, food and tobacco are offered to the ancestors. Guests place a small piece of food that makes them feel connected to their ancestors on a plate. That plate is then offered to the ancestors as a way to thank them and to nourish their spirit as they continue to guide us through our journey.
While Leonard led the group through the ceremony, guests were treated to a song and drumming performance by Sara Luey, who also identifies by her spirit name, Spotted Eagle Women.

The Feast for the Ancestors is an important tradition as it brings the community together, providing Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples the opportunity to connect and build a stronger sense of unity. Feasts are also a critical part of practicing and preserving Indigenous culture and heritage.
The ceremony was attended by members of Sunnybrook’s Indigenous Community Advisory Committee, the Senior Leadership Team, the President’s Anti-Racism Taskforce and staff from across the hospital.
