Leaders, how do you feel when you leave your one-on-one meetings? If you’ve been thinking, “𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦... 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥?” you’re not alone. It’s a feeling many leaders recognize. One-on-ones can cover a lot of ground without addressing what people really need. Here are three shifts that helped our leaders turn one-on-ones into deeper, more meaningful conversations: 𝟭. 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗽 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆. Instead of starting with, “How’s the project going?” try something like, “What part of this feels unclear or challenging?” It opens the door to an actual conversation (and often a clearer next step) rather than a rundown of project updates. 𝟮. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀. A quick “Nice job” is fine but asking, “What part of that are you most proud of?” results in a clearer idea of how they like to be recognized. And it makes the moment feel intentional instead of routine. 𝟯. 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗼𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘅. When someone comes to you with a challenge, it’s tempting to solve it on the spot (we want to be helpful). Instead, pause and try asking, “What options are you thinking about?” Giving them that space to work through the problem themselves in a low-risk moment helps strengthen their ability to evaluate choices instead of always defaulting to your solution. Over time, these coaching moments help build the kind of trust, autonomy and confidence teams rely on when things move quickly. If you’re looking for ready-to-use scripts and a 30-minute one-on-one outline that you can put into practice this week, our new blog breaks everything down. We’re still feeling the joy after receiving the Phil Award for Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist at AFP Ottawa’s Philanthropy Awards event last week. Huge thanks to Christie Lake Kids, CAMH Foundation and Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Centre of Ottawa for nominating us. And big kudos to all the amazing organizations that inspire our team to keep showing up, giving back and lifting communities across Canada. From our annual bocce ball fundraiser for CLK and CHEO to our partnerships with CAMH’s Shkaabe Makwa Centre and national non-profit Pow Wow Pitch, we appreciate the opportunity to support organizations that help raise the tides for all. Thank you, AFP Ottawa Chapter, for a night full of energy, emotion and community spirit. We’re honoured to be recognized alongside the many incredible recipients who work to make life better for so many every day. Many thanks also to Caroline Phillips for capturing everything — and everyone — so beautifully! As our co-founder and owner Kathryn Tremblay (She/Her) mentions below, our team loved being in a room full of so much positivity. Alex Samaroo, M.Acc, CPA, CA, Stacey Mallory, Matt Sowinski, Nicole Vanbergen, Meagan Thompson (she/her), Kirsty Howe and Shawn Giles
The AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards (lovingly called the “The Phils”) represent the very best of the charitable sector, recognizing a big-hearted community that gives to causes that matter. Last Thursday, Altis was honoured to receive the Phil Award for Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist. Nominated by Adrienne Vienneau, the Executive Director of Christie Lake Kids, and seconded by both the CAMH Foundation AND Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Centre of Ottawa, the Altis team was excited to be recognized for our financial giving and community impact. As our main community driver, Nicole Vanbergen, said, “At Altis, giving back is part of who we are. From our signature Bocce Battle held every September, which has raised over $200,000 for CLK and CHEO, to our inaugural Shoreline Clean-up in Vancouver, and our annual partnership with CAMH’s Shkaabe Makwa Centre, our team shows up in action. Each year we support over 20 organizations across Canada, including The Hospital for Sick Children, Covenant House Vancouver, Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Centre, The 519, and many more – we focus on initiatives that strengthen people and open doors.” In true Sam Laprade, CFRE style, she laughed, she hugged, she cried – all while making each recipient feel valued. Sam even shared the mic with Outstanding Individual Youth Philanthropist, Delaila Salem from BGC Ottawa, giving her a chance to practise her moderating and hosting skills. Talk about mentorship in action!! It was nice to be welcomed by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe who, despite a heavy schedule, makes time to strengthen community ties and thank a sector that gives back. Always great to see Tahera Mufti too. Huge shout out to the award recipients who contribute to social progress in our community, including Adrian Burns and Greg Kane, Delphine Haslé, CFRE, Jim Kyte, C.M., Oliver Saner, TAAG, the Ashbury Parents’ Guild and the Griffin Bell Family. Thank you to my friends Soula Burrell and Tony Burrell 🇨🇦 for being champions for me and many others in our community, and many thanks to my team for joining me at this celebration and bringing so much positive energy to everything you do Alex Samaroo, M.Acc, CPA, CA, Stacey Mallory, Matt Sowinski, Nicole Vanbergen, Meagan Thompson (she/her), Kirsty Howe and Shawn Giles. As always, Caroline Phillips wrote a great wrap-up here: https://lnkd.in/edTNEf3D Thanks for the great pic of our team, Caroline!

If you could sit in on the debrief 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 your interview, what do you think the hiring team actually talks about? It’s not your handshake or your outfit. Instead, they talk about your energy. Your listening skills. Whether your answers felt real. The experience you bring to the role. Whether they could picture you on their team. We’ve rounded up interview etiquette tips that genuinely shape those conversations, along with some outdated “rules” you can stop stressing about. Five years in, and Eric Myers has become one of those rare people who make the entire team breathe easier. Eric’s the person you count on. Always. He’s consistent and reliable and somehow manages to explore every avenue in every search without ever breaking his stride. If there’s a new path to investigate, he’s already down it. If a call needs to be made, he won’t stop until he reaches the person who can help him deliver. What stands out most, though, is how he approaches his work. Eric is the definition of ‘leading by example.’ He supports his team members with thoughtful mentoring, asks good questions and shares insights that help sharpen our overall approach. He’s organized, clear and efficient, always using his time wisely while still being the person who’s quick to offer help. His consistency shows up everywhere — in his strong performance, in the trust his teammates place in him and in the way he brings a calm, positive presence to every conversation. And yes, his perfectly timed GIFs remain undefeated. Outside the office, Eric channels that same energy into all the things he loves: volleyball, softball and travel adventures with his wife Natasha. And this December, he steps into a new chapter as a first-time dad — a milestone the whole team is excited to celebrate with him. Eric, thank you for five years of dedication, focus and collaboration. You make our work better and our team stronger, and we’re grateful to have you here. Happy anniversary! Here’s to the next chapter. 🎉 #WorkAnniversary #5YearsStrong #CelebratingSuccess #TeamAltis #RecruitmentJourney

If there’s one thing Lernik Baranian, CSMR, knows for sure, it’s that passion shows — and that’s what makes her approach to recruitment feel different. As a 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘀, she shows up with genuine curiosity, a thoughtful mindset and an energy you can feel through every conversation, whether in person or over the phone/screen. A few fun facts about Lernik: - She believes authenticity always beats “just doing the job” - Her retail roots taught her the power of listening - She’s a certified makeup artist (and loves a creative challenge) - Her favourite yoga pose is the Tree Pose because it tests balance, stability and focus all at once (easier said than done 🌳🧘♀️) And the career advice she lives by: “Love what you do. People feel your energy and that’s what makes the difference.” Scroll through the slides to get to know Lernik — her perspective, her people-first approach and the passion she brings to every placement. #StaffingAndRecruiting #PeopleOfAltis #AltisTeam #WeAreAltis #Testimonial

Ever accepted a job offer and then wondered, ‘𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦?’ The answer is nuanced. While the wiggle room in offers varies based on everything from salary budgets and pay bands to your experience and qualifications, in general, the first offer is not necessarily the 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 offer. In fact, most hiring teams 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 you to negotiate a 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 offer. The key is knowing what’s reasonable and how to ask because, let’s face it, talking about money can be uncomfortable. For pointers, we turned to our recruiters and gathered their advice into a practical guide to help you negotiate with confidence. Inside, you’ll find: ▪️ Guidance on when to ask and what to say ▪️ Real-world scripts and templates to make your own ▪️ Ways to frame your value ▪️ Advice on how to negotiate without feeling “pushy” Because it’s not 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 an offer, it’s a negotiation window most candidates never open. Let’s change that: https://lnkd.in/gPMMX236 And save this post for your next job offer... it might pay off (literally) 💸

A fundraiser that celebrates all four seasons in one night? Count us in. Christie Lake Kids hosted a spectacular Four Seasons Fundraiser last night, transforming the room into an immersive celebration of camp, community and care. From the fantastic seasonal dishes to the incredible hip-hop performances by campers to their Leaders-in-Training sharing stories of building confidence, the evening perfectly captured exactly what CLK does best: building year-round opportunities for kids and youth to shine. It was impossible not to leave inspired. Our Altis crew had their own fun too (we have the photo booth evidence to prove it!), and we left feeling grateful for the opportunity to support an organization making such an impact for kids and youth in our community. Big thanks to Adrienne Vienneau and the entire CLK team, as well as Urban Element and all the sponsors for pulling together an evening that felt both meaningful and just plain joyful.
