Steer is proud to have supported the joint bid – submitted by the Irish Football Association, Scottish Football Association, Football Association of Wales and the The Football Association – to host the FIFA Women's World Cup™ 2035. The proposal puts forward 22 world-class venues and a shared ambition to deliver the largest single-sport event ever staged in the UK, with 4.5 million tickets available for fans, and the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted here since 1966.   Our role focused on developing and authoring the transport section of the bid book, production of host city maps and technical content that show how fans, teams and communities can move safely, sustainably and seamlessly across all host cities.   Our commitment to strengthening women’s sport runs deep. This year we published Playing to the Crowd, authored by senior consultant Charlotte Read – our evidence-based report exploring what drives women’s match-day attendance and how clubs, venues and transport partners can design experiences that feel safer, more inclusive and more enjoyable for everyone. We also continue to support major tournaments, including our recent work on the Women’s Rugby World Cup, helping organisers plan crowd flow, transport operations and city-wide mobility.   Philip Turner, project director for Steer, said: “Hosting the 2035 tournament would be a generational opportunity to inspire new audiences, elevate women’s football and strengthen the cultural and economic legacy of the game. We’re proud to play our part.”   Find out more about the joint bid here: https://lnkd.in/e5gnvJhp Read our Playing to the Crowd report: https://lnkd.in/eaRy2gFW   #AllTogether   Tim Goss, Jen Alexander, Simon Hall, Christa M.

Director at Steer. Chair of Transport Planning Society. Vision-led Transport Planning. Shaping more sustainable places. Consensus-building.

I’m really looking forward to talking to Dr Felicity Heathcote-Márcz from 💜 Bare Analysis at our forthcoming Steer webinar on Tuesday 2nd December about planning for people, through meaningful engagement.   Transport interventions have greatest impact when they’re grounded in how people actually move, interact and experience places. That’s why genuinely understanding communities is essential to delivering successful, future-ready plans and projects.   We’ll be sharing practical lessons learned from recent projects which were shaped by deep community and political engagement, behavioural research and lived-experience insights.   Register to join us online or receive the recording if you can’t make it live: https://lnkd.in/e93A8GRV

What does truly people-centred transport planning look like in practice? This year’s Local Transport Summit highlighted just how central human insight has become to delivering better outcomes for local communities.   Hosted in Derby, the Summit brought together leaders from across the UK at a pivotal moment for the East Midlands, as devolved powers now reshape how the region plans for transport, housing, skills, and net zero.   Our team explored the challenges and opportunities ahead, from tackling rural isolation and bus capacity pressures to designing networks that reflect how people move and live today.   We’ve pulled together our key takeaways, including: - The growing importance of human-centred decision-making in long-term planning - The role of devolution, new national strategies and the Bus Services Act - Why early, integrated planning is essential to avoid locking in car-dependent development - How community voice and storytelling are shaping more trusted, supported outcomes 📘 Read the full round-up and explore the themes set to define local transport for the next decade: https://lnkd.in/eJNACBRU

Active travel is moving up the national agenda, now comes the harder part: delivery.   As headline sponsor of Active Travel Innovations 2025, Steer helped shape discussions on how local authorities can turn investment, insight and community engagement into high-quality, inclusive walking, wheeling and cycling networks.   In our latest article, Dom Smith highlights standout themes from the event, including:  - Designing accessible paths and parks  - Improving micromobility access  - The role of walking freight in cleaner city logistics   📄 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eWizPNji

Today’s budget from UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves was hotly anticipated with headlines focusing largely on tax increases and reforms to the benefit system. For the most part funding for transport, energy and infrastructure was settled in the 2024 Autumn budget and the 2025 Comprehensive Spending Review. However, after a turbulent year for UK borrowing costs, Reeves did make some commitments (and recommitments) that maintained her approach to investment as a means of driving economic growth. Below are four points from today’s budget that we think are relevant for the sectors Steer serves: - Capital spending remains ringfenced: The Chancellor reaffirmed £120 billion of capital spending across departments that will include housing, transport and energy infrastructure. - Transport projects to go ahead: Specific mention was made of funding for the Lower Thames Crossing, East Midlands Rail Hub, Northern Powerhouse Rail and the TransPennine upgrade. - Skills devolution boost: £13 billion is on offer via integrated settlements for Mayoral Strategic Authorities including Greater Manchester, West Midlands, Liverpool City Region, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire for skills, business support and infrastructure in alignment with local growth plans. - EV road taxing: Widely trailed, the new vehicle excise duty (VED) will see EV drivers now face a 3p-per-mile tax with a 1.5p rate for plug-in hybrids. The chancellor accompanied this with a pledge to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure. Steer, as always, stands ready to help our clients across transport, development, infrastructure, energy and more. If you’d like to discuss what today’s budget could mean for your region or sector, get in touch.

🏆 Award-winning innovation at London Waterloo!   We’re thrilled that the Waterloo Freight Hub, developed by Cross River Partnership and London Borough of Lambeth with support from Steer and Network Rail, has won the Last Mile Logistics Award at the 2025 CiTTi Awards.   This project transforms 100,000+ sq ft of underused space beneath Waterloo Station into a zero-emission logistics hub, showing what’s possible when cities rethink hidden infrastructure. Our analysis helped build the investment case, highlighting the operational, environmental and economic benefits of a multi-modal freight hub.   The pilot, already in action with Delivery Mates, is proving real impact: shifting last-mile deliveries to e-cargo bikes, reducing emissions, and improving London’s air quality.   Discover the full story and why this project is a model for cities worldwide: https://lnkd.in/e3SEPQ3J
