  • The season of Advent, meaning “arrival”, begins today and marks the four-week period in the Christian (Western) faith leading up to the Christmas miracle, where the birth of Jesus is celebrated and remembered by Christian communities around the world. Advent is a shared experience of Christian meditation and prayer that celebrates the arrival of Jesus. It is often recognized by reflecting on the concepts of hope, peace, love and joy in each of the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Advent practices can vary across Christian communities but all focus on the hope-filled birth and arrival of Jesus. We recognize this time of reflection, hope, and anticipation observed by many Christian communities here in #YorkRegion and around the world. #YorkRegion is committed to creating a welcoming & #inclusive environment. • As we begin the 2025 White Ribbon Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York stand with communities across Canada and around the world in calling for an end to violence that disproportionately impacts women, girls and gender-diverse individuals. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home, workplace and community. Yet, too many continue to experience harm where they should be most protected. Today, and every day, we honour the strength and resilience of survivors and hold space for those who may not yet feel ready or able to seek help. York Region remains committed to working with our local and Indigenous partners, community organizations, law enforcement and frontline service providers to expand access to supports and promote relationships built on safety, dignity and respect. On November 25, 2025, York Region will join communities across Canada in marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The clock tower at the York Region Administrative Centre in the Town of Newmarket will be illuminated in purple as a visible symbol of hope, support and solidarity. We are also proud to support the White Ribbon Campaign and we encourage everyone, especially men and boys, to speak out and take action to end gender-based violence. As we reflect on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6, 2025, we remember the 14 young women murdered at Montréal’s École Polytechnique in 1989. Their lives were taken simply because they were women. This solemn anniversary reminds us that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to create communities free from violence and fear. Regional Council remains steadfast in our belief that every person deserves to be safe, respected and valued. Together, we will continue to build a future where equality, compassion and safety are not aspirations, but realities for all who call York Region home. Eric Jolliffe York Region Chairman and CEO

  • Today, we commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji (1621-1675), the ninth of the Ten Sikh Gurus. He is remembered not only for his defence of the Sikh Faith but also for willingly giving up his life for religious liberty for all faiths.   On this solemn day, we join our Sikh residents in remembering the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to religious freedom shown by Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. His martyrdom is a reminder of the importance of standing up for justice, protecting the rights of others and living with integrity. #YorkRegion is committed to creating a welcoming and #inclusive environment that recognizes and celebrates all dimensions of #diversity. • Today is #NationalHousingDay. Secure and affordable housing is the foundation of strong, inclusive communities and a critical social determinant of health. In York Region, the demand for emergency, transitional and affordable housing continues to grow and the need for action has never been greater. York Region continues to take bold action to create inclusive communities with a full range of housing options and services to support residents at all ages and stages of their lives. York Region is working collaboratively with local municipalities and the provincial and federal governments to help build a better future where all residents have the housing they need. York Region is getting ready to put shovels in the ground for Bayview Parkway and Box Grove community housing developments with construction expected to begin soon. Together, these community housing developments will create approximately 380units of new purpose-built rental community housing. Another important part of our work includes advocating to the provincial and federal governments to commit to a shared funding model and sustained investment in emergency, transitional and affordable and supportive housing, including operating and capital funding for new builds and repairs to existing stock. We continue to advocate for permanent and increased funding for housing benefits and homelessness prevention programs, alongside stronger coordination to address mental health, substance misuse and housing stability.
