Waterfront Toronto is the public advocate and steward of Toronto’s waterfront revitalization.
About us
Waterfront Toronto is the public advocate and steward of Toronto’s waterfront revitalization. We are in the midst of the largest urban redevelopment project in North America, putting people first and reconnecting our city to the water's edge. We are developing mixed-use neighborhoods with high-quality parks and public realm, state-of-the-art infrastructure and the highest standards of environmental sustainability. In 2001, the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto established Waterfront Toronto (then known as the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation) to oversee all aspects of the planning and development of Toronto’s central waterfront. Waterfront Toronto’s vision is to work with community and public and private sector partners to create waterfront parks, public spaces, cultural institutions, and diverse and sustainable commercial and residential communities. By employing global best practices and made-in-Toronto solutions, the city’s new waterfront communities will protect and enhance our natural environment, and will ultimately establish themselves as global models for sustainability. 🚧 Traffic Update: Lake Shore Bridge Closure 🚧 Beginning at 9 PM on November 28, the westbound Lake Shore Bridge will close for up to 10 days to complete watermain and expansion-joint work. During the closure, westbound traffic will shift to a single temporary lane on the eastbound bridge, while two eastbound lanes remain open. Traffic control personnel will be onsite 24/7 to manage the intersection and maintain traffic flow. Please note that heavy trucks cannot turn right from the Don Roadway off-ramp onto westbound Lake Shore due to turning-radius limitations. Waterfront Toronto reposted this
I realized I never shared a proper recap of one of my favorite projects to date! 🐟 Water Wonders was truly a wild ride to bring to life—not only is it a giant carved sculpture, but it floats! I came up with this concept for a Toronto public art installation over a year ago, and after all the logistics and months of creating, it finally made its big debut on the water at the Toronto WaterFall Festival about a month ago. The characters are all critters you’d find along the waterfront… just a little “Melissa-fied” (yes, I just came up with that.) None of this would have been possible without the massive team behind it. I’m just one small part of the whole thing. Huge shoutout to Robocut studio for carving and painting my vision into reality—and being an absolute joy to work with. Dario D3P0L Productions for being the cool, calm, and collected production manager every artist dreams of working with. The wonderful LNDMRK for not only producing this project, but supporting me and all the little details along the way. The installation team for spending an 8 hour day installing this in the water. And of course Waterfront Toronto for believing in the concept from the start. None of this would have happened if the project didn’t exist so a huge thank you for funding meaningful projects for the city. The goal was to make people along the waterfront smile while sharing important information about water conservation and protecting our precious ecosystems, and I think we achieved just that! My heart is so full of joy with this project 🤍

A year ago, we announced Unfinished Arch — a new permanent artwork by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, selected from more than 80 international proposals as the “Destination Art Piece” for East Bayfront, coming soon to Sherbourne Common. What makes Unfinished Arch so special? This large-scale, interactive artwork is designed to be completed through touch. When visitors place their hands on its open edge, sensors trigger a gentle flow of light and sound that travels through the arch — connecting people and place through participation. Created with accessibility in mind, the arch’s stepped form welcomes engagement from visitors of all heights, including those using wheelchairs. More than a sculpture, Unfinished Arch is an invitation — to connect, to belong, and to see yourself as part of Toronto’s evolving waterfront story. Watch this video to explores the inspiration behind the artwork, how it fits into the larger East Bayfront Public Art Master Plan, and the importance of public art in creating complete communities: https://lnkd.in/emsNckaE

We’re looking back at IT COMES IN WAVES, a striking floating artwork by Toronto-based artist Ben Johnston, installed in Toronto’s Inner Harbour from August to October 2025, commissioned by Waterfront Toronto. This bold installation blended typography, sculpture, and motion to explore the rhythm of change – both emotional and environmental. The project brought together an incredible team of fabricators, welders, and collaborators including Trevor Wheatley and Cosmo Dean, whose craftsmanship helped transform words into a living experience on the water. The newly constructed Don Roadway, set to open this month, has been raised to a higher elevation for improved flood protection and includes dedicated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. It also provides easy access to Biidaasige Park through the newly construction pedestrian and cyclist pathways. This milestone improves travel for everyone driving, walking, and cycling along Toronto’s eastern waterfront and sets the stage for future trail connections by the City. What is Unfinished Arch? It’s a new destination public art installation coming to Sherbourne Common, created by internationally renowned artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer — known for his interactive works that become activated through public participation. Standing 9.1 metres tall and dramatically cantilevering 14 metres from a single support, Unfinished Arch invites visitors to “complete” it. When someone reaches out to touch its open end, contact sensors activate a flowing line of light, and faint sound, symbolizing connection, creativity, and collective meaning. Unlike traditional monuments, Unfinished Arch embraces incompleteness, reminding us that communities are always evolving, and that public spaces take shape through the people who inhabit them. Construction is planned to be completed in two phases: - Phase 1: September – December 2025 - Phase 2: Early 2026, concluding with the installation’s unveiling shortly after Stay tuned for more information.
