I am still holding the moments, the joy, and the collective brilliance that filled Highland Hall this weekend at the Toronto District School Board 4th Annual Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) Conference: From the Village to the Vision: Youth Leading Systems Change. 56 Black high school student researchers shared the questions they have been carrying, the stories they are connected to, and the futures they are already shaping. Their research spoke to identity, belonging, wellness, representation, school climate, community care, and the possibility of educational spaces that truly listen. What moved me most was the way students led with clarity, confidence, courage, and care for one another. They reminded us that research is never just theory. It is lived experience. It is memory. It is community. It is vision. Thank you to every student presenter, host and alumni mentor who stepped forward so powerfully. Thank you to the families and caregivers who continue to hold the village around them. Thank you to our Community Café partners who brought resources, guidance, and love into the space. Thank you to our University of Toronto Scarborough partners and volunteers for welcoming us and stewarding the environment with intention. A special thank you to our Open Plenary panelists Dr Nana George Dei, Dr. Notisha Massaquoi ,Damian Ezirim, Thando Hyman, Director Clayton LaTouche and Hadiya Mohamed who opened the day in conversation with such honesty, wisdom, and care. Your presence modeled what intergenerational leadership looks and feels like in action. Our students felt seen, affirmed, and accompanied. Deep gratitude to the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement team, research associates, and planning team for the months of preparation and quiet coordination behind the scenes. None of this happens alone. The conference reaffirmed what we know: Black youth are knowledge holders, memory keepers, innovators, system shifters, and architects of new futures. Our role is not to speak for them, but to build with them. From the village to the vision. And always, in community. 🖤
