Science touches every part of our lives — yet journalists around the world struggle for the space, trust, and resources needed to tell science stories. With shrinking newsrooms, reduced funding, and a fragmenting media ecosystem, reporting on science has never been more challenging. 2023 award winners Andrea Obaid Carrión, Fredrick Mugira, and Yvette Cabrera share firsthand insight into the barriers science journalists are facing. These themes were also explored in a recent The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine webinar, Advancing High-Quality Science Journalism: Challenges and Pathways Forward, which examined both the obstacles and the opportunities for strengthening science, health, and medical reporting in an evolving media landscape. Physical activity is widely recognized as a cornerstone to prevent and treat obesity, but questions remain about the best ways to integrate movement into clinical care and daily life — particularly in light of new GLP-1 medications and other shifts in the obesity management landscape. In July 2025, the National Academies held a workshop to examine best practices for incorporating physical activity into care strategies, developing personalized approaches to physical activity, and better health outcomes tracking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this week cited some of our work in new guidance related to vaccines and autism. However, the citations do not provide the greater context of the full body of work on vaccine safety that is essential for informed debate about this topic. "There is no question that oversight of high-consequence biological research is needed. But what kind, and how much?" In a recent Issues in Science and Technology piece, David Gillum explains how creating a National Biosafety and Biosecurity Agency that oversees the entire research life cycle can help manage risks and build public trust while allowing scientists to continue doing good work.
