Get turn-by-turn navigation

Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices. Learn more about what you can do with Gemini, privacyprotection of minorsand availability for supported devices, languages and territories. Gemini will understand the same commands as Google Assistant and also give you the option to speak naturally. Google Assistant is still available for use until March 2026.
 

Android Auto will give you voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, lane guidance and more with Google Maps or your favorite navigation app.

Navigate with voice commands
  1. Say "Hey Google" or select the microphone Microphone.
  2. Say what you'd like to do.

You can speak naturally and be understood when you talk to Gemini.

You can ask for things like directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and more.

You can also use regular voice commands with Gemini or Google Assistant:

If Gemini or Google Assistant suggests multiple locations, confirm the one you want and follow the directions to your destination.

While you use Google Maps to navigate, you can open Settings  to adjust your route options, display options, and more. While you are parked, you can also adjust these settings in the Google Maps app on your phone.

Navigate with the display
  1. On your car display, tap the app launcher .
  2. Select your favorite navigation app to browse destinations and get directions.

If your navigation app has a search function and you want to type in a destination with your car screen, you must put your car in park (P).

There are three quick options to select a destination with Google Maps.

  • Recent will show places you’ve been to recently and suggestions based on your recent searches on Google Maps.

  • Categories lets you select from options such as gas stations, coffee shops, and more.

  • Saved locations will display the locations you have saved to your Google Maps account.

From Android Auto, follow these steps to set a destination with Google Maps:

  1. Tap Search or this icon .
  2. Select Recent, Categories, or Saved.  
  3. Select a result to start navigation.
Type in a destination

Put your car in park (P). With Android Auto on your car screen, you won't be able to type in your destination until you do so.

  1. Open Google Maps Maps or your favorite navigation app.
  2. You can select Home or Work if you have those addresses in your Contacts. Or to open the keyboard on the car screen or your mobile device, select search .
  3. Enter your destination. Some examples of things you can type are:
    • Union Square, San Francisco
    • Philz Coffee
    • 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA
  4. If multiple locations come up, confirm the one you want and follow the directions to your destination.
Get traffic information

While you navigate with Google Maps, you will see color-coded traffic conditions on highways and roads where information is available. To turn traffic information on and off, follow these steps:

  1. Tap settings .
  2. Tap Traffic.
  3. To turn traffic information on, tap the toggle to change it from off to on.
  4. To turn traffic information off, tap the toggle to change it from on to off.
