I am unable to create an external connection in BigQuery. I am the Project Owner, but the option "Create connection" is missing from the UI.

Expected behavior: When I navigate to the "External connections" section in the BigQuery Explorer and click the context menu (...), I expect to see an option to "Create connection".

Actual behavior: The context menu only shows "Refresh contents".

Troubleshooting steps performed:

I have confirmed I have the Owner role for the project.

I have confirmed the BigQuery Connection API is enabled.

I have confirmed the project has an active and attached billing account and is not in Sandbox mode.

The project does not belong to an Organization.

I have tried multiple browsers (Chrome, Edge) and cleared my cache.

The service is not behaving as documented. Please investigate the backend configuration for this project.

To create external connections, click on +Add Data at the top of the Explorer pane. E.g. To create a connection to Cloud Spanner, see https://cloud.google.com/bigquery/docs/connect-to-spanner

The External Connections group in the Explorer pane is for viewing only. All other actions are in different parts of the console. The service is behaving as documented though the UI might benefit from some changes. Do send feedback or create a feature request if you have a few moments to spare.
