Creating Innovative Solutions For A Sustainable Future
About us
A dynamic and flexible organization with a global vision and a local focus, TERI was established in 1974, with the initial focus on documentation and information dissemination. Research activities, initiated towards the end of 1982, were rooted in TERI’s firm conviction that efficient utilization of energy and sustainable use of natural resources would propel the process of development. All activities in TERI, the largest developing-country institution working towards sustainability, move from formulating local- and national-level strategies to shaping global solutions to critical issues. Buoyed by more than 50 years of excellence in research and innovation, TERI is now poised for future growth, driven by a global vision and outreach, with a philosophy that assigns primacy to enterprise in government, industry, and individual actions.

#TERIWebinar On November 26, 2025, TERI EIACP hosted an engaging webinar titled “From Carbon to Clean: Transforming Transport for Tomorrow” to commemorate World Sustainable Transport Day. The session highlighted sustainable mobility solutions and the role of collective action in reducing transport-related emissions. The webinar commenced with Ms Bhargavi S., Information Officer at TERI-EIACP, delivering the welcome and opening remarks, setting the tone for an engaging session. This was followed by Ms Deepa N, Fellow & Area Convener, Knowledge Resource Centre at TERI, who presented a detailed overview of EIACP and Mission LiFE, emphasizing sustainable lifestyles as a cornerstone for environmental protection. The speaker sessions featured eminent experts, like Ms Himani Jain (CEEW), who discussed “Is Our Commute Choking Our Cities?” Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, TERI, gave an extensive analysis on “Bridging Policy and Practice for Pollution-Free Transport,” while highlighting Transport, Emissions, and Reduction Strategies. He spoke about how transportation is a catalyst for socio-economic development in India while also contributing to emissions of CO₂ as well as air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOX) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5). Ms Neetu Anna Joseph (GIZ) spoke extensively on “Behavioral Shifts for Clean Air.” She highlighted the role of E-Autos and Loops, community-led bicycle sharing systems, and cycle stand infrastructure. This was followed by an illuminating session by Mr Mir Aijaz Ahmad (IUST), who showcased “Success Stories on Wheels: Clean Transport Innovations from India and Beyond.” He highlighted how traffic congestion often leads to noise pollution and, in the long run, affects our mental health and other aspects of life, such as sleep and stress. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all speakers and participants. TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute reposted this
On the sidelines of COP30 Brazil, the Brahma Kumaris hosted a powerful conversation exploring how ethics, values, and conscious living can accelerate the global transition to a sustainable future. We are pleased to share that Ms. Shabnam Bassi, Deputy CEO & Secretary, GRIHA Council and Director, Sustainable Buildings, TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute joined this conversation, alongside Ms. Sonja Maria Ohlsson, Brahma Kumaris Focal Point, UNFCCC. The session was moderated by Mr. Golo Pilz, Renewable Energy Adviser, Brahma Kumaris. The discussion centred on how ethical leadership, inner transformation, and responsible lifestyles can strengthen global sustainability efforts. It reflected on India’s climate-responsive strategies from passive design and cool roofs to nature-based solutions, and highlighted how ancient Indian wisdom offers practical guidance for balancing human ambition with ecological limits. The conversation emphasised that meaningful climate action requires not just technology and policy, but also values-driven decision-making, collective responsibility, and a mindful shift in the way we inhabit our cities and our planet. #InTheNews Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, Transport and Urban Governance Division, TERI, participated in a panel discussion hosted by NDTV Profit on India's growing EV push amid a worsening air quality crisis. If we have to reduce emissions contribution from the transport sector and improve the air quality of the Gangetic region, EVs and not hybrids are the best solution currently available. The life cycle analysis study of TERI shows that even with the current coal share in our energy mix, EVs have a lower carbon footprint compared to diesel or CNG cars. Also, since 70-90% of the emissions happen during the operations phase, EVs have far better emissions performance, Mr Qamar emphasized. The co-panelists were: Ms Kalyani Tembhe, Programme Officer, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi; Mr Amit Bhatt, MD, ICCT India; and Mr Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor, Autocar India.
