#InTheNews Mr Sharif Qamar, Associate Director, Transport and Urban Governance Division, TERI, participated in a panel discussion hosted by NDTV Profit on India's growing EV push amid a worsening air quality crisis. If we have to reduce emissions contribution from the transport sector and improve the air quality of the Gangetic region, EVs and not hybrids are the best solution currently available. The life cycle analysis study of TERI shows that even with the current coal share in our energy mix, EVs have a lower carbon footprint compared to diesel or CNG cars. Also, since 70-90% of the emissions happen during the operations phase, EVs have far better emissions performance, Mr Qamar emphasized. The co-panelists were: Ms Kalyani Tembhe, Programme Officer, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi; Mr Amit Bhatt, MD, ICCT India; and Mr Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor, Autocar India. The important point of lower EV lifecycle emissions and increasing gap with ICE over years nicely put forward by Sharif
The problem with all these analysis with EV penetration is the focus on reduced lifecycle emissions. It's not an environmental issue, its a societal issue and lack of convenience, affordability and lack of adequate charging station. And those who think Indian consumers will shift for the environment is highly mistaken with level playing field for EVs and ICEs. The problem - EVs are secondary vehicle for most owners in India. This is due to affordability in meeting local travel needs and subsidies. If there is an air pollution angle - then first let's stop promoting more cars and focus on creating public transport. Trafiic is equally reasponsible for increased pollution load. Better traffic conditions means less emissions, better public transport - public shift from cars to alternate mode of transport. I posted a month ago on China's gasoline demand is estimated to have fallen 9% in October due to EVs and EV owners drove to the extent of 2000 KMs ride on EVs. "Can we think of taking a 2000 km ride without worrying about charging infrastructure in India?" https://tinyurl.com/4mbjc7n8
