Connecting police for a safer world

À propos

The world’s largest police organization, INTERPOL’s mission is to assist law enforcement agencies in each of its 196 member countries to combat all forms of transnational crime. Guided by four core functions, INTERPOL provides a high-tech infrastructure of technical and operational support to enable police forces around the world to meet the growing challenges of crime in the 21st century. The General Secretariat in Lyon, France, is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a central contact point for the National Central Bureau (NCB) in every member country for assistance or information on cross-border investigations. All NCBs are connected to each other and the General Secretariat through I-24/7, INTERPOL’s secure global police communications system, which also enables law enforcement officers to directly check a range of vital police databases. INTERPOL uses a system of colour-coded international notices to locate, arrest or provide warnings about fugitives and other criminals.

INTERPOL’s General Assembly has adopted a Resolution addressing the growing threat posed by transnational scam centres - criminal hubs linked to large-scale fraud, human trafficking and abuse.   Often under the pretext of lucrative overseas jobs, victims are trafficked into compounds where they are forced to carry out illicit schemes such as voice phishing, romance scams, investment fraud and cryptocurrency scams targeting individuals worldwide.   While not everyone working in a scam centre is a victim of human trafficking, those who are held against their will frequently endure abuse including physical violence, sexual exploitation, torture and rape.   The Resolution, proposed by the Republic of Korea, also highlighted the increased use of advanced technologies by criminals to deceive victims and mask their operations, with the highly adaptive nature of these cross-border criminal networks requiring a coordinated global response. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dxNKWp_e

Five Police Chiefs and two Secretaries General addressing one problem – transnational organized crime. Today I moderated a General Assembly session dedicated to INTERPOL’s most fundamental purpose: identifying and disrupting transnational organized crime networks. I was privileged to be joined by six leaders operating in diverse criminal landscapes, each bringing their own perspective and ideas on how to tackle this national, regional and global threat – and how INTERPOL helps them achieve this. Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service, Dinah Marathe highlighted how, AI-fueled scams and human trafficking are rising – but connecting all Botswana police services to INTERPOL’s network is mitigating these threats. Eric SNOECK, Commissioner General of the Belgian National Police outlined how Europe’s openness is being exploited - criminals use free movement to launder money, run online crime services, and launch hybrid attacks that blur the line between crime and geopolitics. Here, INTERPOL’s neutrality makes trusted cooperation possible. World Customs Organization Secretary General Ian Saunders highlighted how the rise of e-commerce has brought convenience, but also challenges. For him the future of enforcement is seamless collaboration between customs and police - turning detection into disruption, as seen by the successes of joint operations with INTERPOL. Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police | Gendarmerie royale du Canada, Mike Duheme reminded us that crime is evolving faster than ever but in parallel the public’s expectations from law enforcement are higher than. Local, national, regional and global cooperation via INTERPOL is essential to protect communities and stay ahead of emerging threats. Richard Chambers, now Commissioner of NZ Police, once served as a seconded officer at INTERPOL - as I did. In terms of his experience, working at INTERPOL exposed him to the wider, more complex reality of organized crime and strengthened his operational insight. His message to all member countries: send your officers. The benefits go well beyond operational skills. And William Rincón Zambrano Director General of the National Police of Colombia, described the brutal realities of drug production, clandestine labs and trafficking routes - and how INTERPOL Notices and global network are vital to stopping the flow. These insights show that while technology is important in combating transnational organized crime, what is vital is more trust, more sharing and more collaboration. It’s events like our General Assembly, which brings the global law enforcement community together, which will make this happen.
