    Let's face it: most user interviews are a waste of time and resources. Teams conduct hours of interviews yet still build features nobody uses. Stakeholders sit through research readouts but continue to make decisions based on their gut instincts. Researchers themselves often struggle to extract actionable insights from their conversation transcripts. Here's why traditional user interviews so often fail to deliver value: 1. They're built on a faulty premise The conventional interview assumes users can accurately report their own behaviors, preferences, and needs. People are notoriously bad at understanding their own decision-making processes and predicting their future actions. 2. They collect opinions, not evidence "What do you think about this feature?" "Would you use this?" "How important is this to you?" These standard interview questions generate opinions, not evidence. Opinions (even from your target users) are not reliable predictors of actual behavior. 3. They're plagued by cognitive biases From social desirability bias to overweighting recent experiences to confirmation bias, interviews are a minefield of cognitive distortions. 4. They're often conducted too late Many teams turn to user interviews after the core product decisions have already been made. They become performative exercises to validate existing plans rather than tools for genuine discovery. 5. They're frequently disconnected from business metrics Even when interviews yield interesting insights, they often fail to connect directly to the metrics that drive business decisions, making it easy for stakeholders to dismiss the findings. 👉 Here's how to transform them from opinion-collection exercises into powerful insight generators: 1. Focus on behaviors, not preferences Instead of asking what users want, focus on what they actually do. Have users demonstrate their current workflows, complete tasks while thinking aloud, and walk through their existing solutions. 2. Use concrete artifacts and scenarios Abstract questions yield abstract answers. Ground your interviews in specific artifacts. Have users react to tangible options rather than imagining hypothetical features. 3. Triangulate across methods Pair qualitative insights with behavioral data, & other sources of evidence. When you find contradictions, dig deeper to understand why users' stated preferences don't match their actual behaviors. 4. Apply framework-based synthesis Move beyond simply highlighting interesting quotes. Apply structured frameworks to your analysis. 5. Directly connect findings to decisions For each research insight, explicitly identify what product decisions it should influence and how success will be measured.     “Is this statistically significant?” – every stakeholder ever I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to answer this. But statistical significance was never designed for qualitative research. We’re not trying to publish academic research We’re not trying to prove universal truths We’re trying to reach theoretical saturation, the point where additional research doesn’t give us new insights Here’s how I handle the question when it comes up: 1. Stop inviting the wrong conversation Numbers like “3 out of 5 users struggled with this” only open the door for debate. Instead, frame findings in a way that’s harder to ignore: ↳ “Users consistently struggled to find this feature.” ↳ “Most participants expected X but got Y.” ↳ “A clear pattern emerged around [pain point].” 2. Reframe the question from stats to risk When stakeholders ask about statistical significance, what they really mean is: “Can we trust this enough to act on it?” My response? “If five people hit the same pothole and wreck their car, how many more do you need before fixing the road?” 3. Shift the focus to theoretical saturation Qualitative research is about reaching a point where more research isn’t adding new insights. ↳ 5 users per segment often surface major issues ↳ 10-15 users per segment usually reach saturation ↳ If you’re still getting new insights after that, your scope is too broad 4. Tie insights to business impact If an insight affects conversion, retention, or revenue, debating sample size is just a distraction ↳ If three enterprise customers say onboarding is confusing, that’s a churn risk ↳ If two usability tests expose a checkout issue, that’s abandoned revenue ↳ If one customer interview reveals a security concern, that’s a crisis waiting to happen 5. Flip the question back on them Next time someone asks if your findings are statistically significant, ask: ↳ How many lost users would be enough to take this seriously? ↳ How much revenue would we need to lose before fixing this? ↳ Would you want us to wait for more data if this were your experience?     I've been getting a lot of questions about how to really use Bayesian methods in UX studies, especially how to come up with a solid prior distribution for your analysis. This issue is important because the prior distribution forms the foundation of Bayesian analysis and shapes how you update your beliefs as new data comes in. Many researchers find it challenging to establish these initial assumptions systematically, which is why I'm writing this post. Before diving into how qualitative data can help, let me explain briefly what Bayesian methods are and why the prior is so important. Bayesian methods let you update your understanding as you gather new data. You begin with a prior distribution, which represents your initial assumptions about a parameter, and then you combine it with observed data using the likelihood function to produce an updated view called the posterior. This process effectively blends what you already know with new information. Now, let me explain how qualitative data can contribute to setting your prior. For example, if you conduct interviews or focus groups and notice that many users mention having trouble navigating a feature, you can count how often this concern arises and translate that frequency into a numerical estimate for your prior. Similarly, if usability tests reveal that users stumble on a specific interaction in about one third of the sessions, you can use that frequency as an initial estimate. Expert opinions are valuable too; if experienced UX professionals suggest that a design flaw might affect roughly 20 percent of users, that percentage can serve as your starting point. Even thematic coding from qualitative data can guide you; if one theme emerges as significantly more prevalent than others, you can assign a higher probability to outcomes related to that theme. These examples illustrate how you can turn rich qualitative insights into concrete numbers that inform your prior distribution. Integrating qualitative insights into Bayesian analysis is a powerful strategy because it grounds your models in real-world user experiences. In UX research, you are not merely relying on abstract numbers; you are capturing the nuances of user behavior and refining your models as new data becomes available. This iterative process leads to a deeper understanding of how users interact with a product and ultimately informs better design decisions. In short, using qualitative data to set your prior distributions is a practical and effective approach. It leverages rich, contextual insights and combines them with the rigorous updating process of Bayesian methods, resulting in more informed and responsive design decisions that truly reflect the user experience.

    "Genchi Genbutsu" is the most powerful optimization principle you've never heard of. Here's how we've used it at The Good... and how you can too. Most users approach a new SaaS tool with a single problem in mind. They sign up, solve that issue, and move on. But what if we could show them the full potential during their trial? Our thinking was to educate users on lesser-known features, then encourage them to explore functionality they might have overlooked. After all, users who discover more value are more likely to subscribe and stick around long-term. Instead of jumping straight into A/B testing, we took a step back. We started with qualitative research. User testing. Consumer interviews. We wanted to understand the why behind the what. This process is reminiscent of Toyota's "genchi genbutsu" principle: ↳ "Go and see for yourself where the work happens." In the digital world, it's harder to "go and see." But it's not impossible. We observed how people actually used the tool. We identified pain points and opportunities. This comprehensive approach led to a revamped onboarding process. One that educates users on all the features they are missing out on. The result? Users now see the full value of our product during the trial period. They're more likely to subscribe because they understand how it solves multiple problems. It's not just about collecting data. It's about understanding the user journeys behind that data.
