    How can you possibly design software systems ahead of time when you don't even know for sure what the customers *really* want? Easily. There's plenty of software projects where you know exactly what the client wants: - When you're rearchitecting a system to handle 10x load, your customers *really* want it to not come crashing down. - When you've discovered a serious bug and the fix requires a software redesign, your customers *really* want it to fix the problem and NOT introduce entirely new bugs. - When you transition from strong consistency to eventual consistency, your customers *really* want to not be punished for write conflicts. - When you make any change to your system — any change at all — your customers *really* want it to not break existing workflows without advance notice. What do these all share in common? They are internalized changes meant to solve the technical problems involved in delivering your solutions. The client-facing part of any system is just the tip of a vast technical iceberg. "Quickly iterating to find the right thing" is important for the client-facing part of software. But once we find that right thing, we have to support it for years and years. Maintaining the same solution under changing circumstances and scales is a major engineering challenge, and one that absolutely benefits from planning. After all, we are not just hired to "deliver the business domain." If our employees only want that, they can hire chop shops or use LLMs. We are hired to deliver *technically-demanding* business domains, and that means developing and maintaining complex technical infrastructure. And that absolutely benefits from software design and up-front planning. It's no surprise that "modern" design tools — TLA+, P, Quint, etc — have found their strongest niche in databases and distributed systems. Those are the systems most obviously seen as "technically demanding problems", and the ones where up-front planning most often saves lots of time and money.
