Empathy at work is non-negotiable for an effective business. Why? Well, a few reasons... → It shows people they’re more than their jobs → It connects different people, different ideas → It turns a team into a tight-knit community When you get where someone’s coming from? They feel valued. And that changes everything. Take our company, Brass Synergy, for example— When looking for our Chief Community Officer & Lead Bot Developer… I spoke with over 100 community managers— Many extremely talented and experienced. Yet… James was the one. He wasn’t just good at his job — he understood people and saw them as long-term partners… As people with dreams and potential. He also has a way of making anyone a true believer— Turning those barely connected to a project into loyal supporters. I shared our long-term vision, even our tight funds. And to show dedication, I offered a small equity to his team… His response? "A small share for my team means more than money to me. It shows belief, trust, and a shared future." Just like that, two days later, we were all in. This story isn’t about a good hire— It’s about how empathy creates a workplace culture people WANT to be a part of. → Seeing beyond immediate needs → Making deals where everyone wins That’s where the magic happens. Empathy is more than a soft skill— It’s an asset that can turn a group of people into a solid, winning team. So, next time you’re in a team meeting or planning a project… Try this: Listen more. Understand more. Empathize more. Your team will thank you for it… And the results will speak for themselves.

This is the question we get asked the most. People are afraid of being “too nice”. ⬇️ Can we just think on that for a minute? 🤔 If someone needs care, we need to care for them. And then they will do their job better. Withholding affirmation, validation, acknowledgment and support just makes someone’s pain worse. ⬇️ How do we tackle this? When we develop leaders to know how to support those with burnout, anxiety, loneliness, loss, depression, trauma and other forms of hardship, here’s where we start: 🔅 See the person through the eyes of their hardship, not their work 🔅 Learn how this challenge is impacting work performance 🔅 Know your boundaries of support 🔅 Work through your own “awkward zone” in supporting them 🔅 Offer up a support plan to get them through the challenge. 🔅 Keep following up until the employee has worked through the challenge. ⬇️ Here’s why it works. We: 🔅 Remove the emotion 🔅 Work through it pragmatically 🔅 Create deeper and more trusting relationships 🔅 Develop loyalty 🔅 Build culture in the best way The key to supporting people struggling? Care coupled with specific skills and actions. Not care coupled with “emotions”. EQ can trip us up in these circumstances. We end up “feeling” too many things. Empathy and compassion are good emotions but we also need to deal with doubt, denial, fear and awkwardness. And real boundaries. ⬇️ Face it - everyone is struggling with something these days. If people are asking for support and you are afraid to be “too nice”? I’m afraid you may not keep that employee. #ShowingUp #SupportiveLeadership

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 Organizational changes can profoundly impact employees. As leaders, how we navigate these sensitive situations signals our values and shapes workplace culture. Through two restructurings, I saw contrasting approaches that highlighted the power of compassionate leadership. The first leader focused solely on finances, detached from the human impact. Morale and trust declined, productivity suffered, and turnover rose. The second leader empathized with affected staff and aided transitions. This compassion cultivated loyalty and resilience. I share these experiences to spotlight the vital role compassion plays in difficult decisions: 🔹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. Clearly communicate rationales and provide regular updates to build trust. 🔹 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. Leverage networks, provide recommendations, and supply career development resources to ease transitions. 🔹 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Validate feelings and reassure staff of their value. This acknowledges the personal toll of change. 🔹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Encourage a supportive, adaptable culture that withstands adversity. 🔹 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. Your actions set the organizational tone. Show genuine care for people’s wellbeing. Leaders guided by empathy and compassion can find their way through challenges, strengthen workplace culture, and foster resilient organizations. Our actions during challenging periods determine how we weather them as a united team. Difficult times demand conscious leadership that prioritizes the well-being of colleagues and our shared future. #leadership #careers #culture #compassion #empathy

When I posted about a lesson I taught my daughter Mara recently, Dr Adarsh M Patil asked me to share more about building strong connections through empathetic parenting. By embodying compassion, parents serve as powerful role models, imparting valuable lessons that extend beyond simple empathy. Compassion is more than sympathy. It's a deep awareness of another's suffering coupled with a genuine desire to alleviate that sadness and suffering. It involves not just understanding but taking positive actions to make a difference. Compassionate individuals radiate kindness, understanding, and a genuine willingness to support those in need. You play a pivotal role in shaping your children's compassionate nature. But this only works when you lead by example, teaching them to be aware of the needs of others. As parents to now-adult children, we reflect on times where we extended a helping hand (just like many of you would), in hopes to make a difference and teach our children how to give back. My children still talk about some of these acts of compassion: - Stepping up when neighbors or friends needed help - Opening our home to a teen friend in need of a safe place to stay for a short stretch - Offering a listening ear and emotional support for a friend during challenging times - Ensuring their teammates facing financial constraints had the necessary equipment - Extending kindness to those experiencing homelessness by providing food and essentials - Inviting someone over for the holidays who may not have a place to go - Adopting three children out of foster care (which was the best decision) Jared and I aren’t special for doing these things — plenty of others do this as well. It's not just about helping others; it's about fostering a sense of community, empathy, and shared humanity. I believe that leading by example is a powerful way to inspire kindness and generosity in the next generation. We can’t stop at discussing compassion — we need to show it through our actions. Become a compassionate role model for the next generation, creating a world where empathy and positive action prevail.

We don't need more sympathy at work, we need more EMPATHY. A few years ago I gave a talk to two large financial organizations. Before going on stage, I saw an employee approach an executive to talk about some of the challenges he was facing. He talked about not fitting in, having a tough relationship with his leader, and having imposter syndrome. The busy executive took a break from checking his email and said "I'm sorry you're having a hard time, I'm sure you will be fine" and went back to checking his email. A few weeks later I'm speaking at another large financial institution and the same things happens. The employee approach the executive and shares some of her challenges. The busy executive puts away his laptop and invites the employee sit down. He then says, "I know how you feel, I felt the same way when I started working here." He then proceeded to share some of the things he did and offered to meet with the employee any time. 🌂 Sympathy is saying "I'm sorry you are in pain." It's like acknowledging the rain from the safety of your umbrella. 🌧️ Empathy dives deeper. It's feeling WITH the person, standing beside them in the rain, sharing their experience. Sympathy might get you a polite response, empathy will get you a human connection. #leadershipdevelopment #leadwithvulnerability #sympathy #empathy #emotionalintelligence #vulnerableleader #realconnections #futureofwork

Most of you know I write about human resources and leading people. I decided to lean into my advice of "there is growth in discomfort," so I wrote a paper on a roadmap to compassion with that in mind. I'll provide the intro and then modify it to be LinkedIn-friendly; thank you in advance for the feedback. At the heart of our existence as human beings lies the profound influence of emotions, shaping the contours of our lives in subtle and profound ways. These emotional currents sway our perceptions, guide our interactions, and influence our decisions considerably. Our moods and feelings influence how we perceive the world, interact with others, and make decisions. At the same time, our feelings often follow ingrained patterns and habits. We often tend to default to specific emotional reactions and behaviors without even realizing it. While emotions arise spontaneously, how we respond to and express them can become habitual routines. This paper will dive into the five stages of human emotions: apathy, pity, sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Dive into the wisdom of this Compassion Explorer: 🌈 Intro to Human Emotions: ↳ Our lives pivot on emotions—shaping perceptions and guiding actions. This journey explores feelings from within to outward. Fostering Connection and Collaboration Being a leader requires empathy, it is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. This emotional intelligence is crucial for fostering a strong and successful team. Leaders who practice empathy create a safe space where employees feel valued and understood.
