By analyzing regulatory shifts, battery tech improvements, and consumer sentiment before they became obvious trends. Ask yourself: What emerging technologies, behaviors, or regulations could change your industry? 2. Scenario Planning – Prepare for multiple futures, not just one Shell has been using scenario planning since the 1970s. In 2020, they modeled a future where oil demand would peak earlier than expected—and adapted their strategy before the crash. Try this: What happens if your biggest revenue stream disappears in 5 years? What’s your backup plan? 3. Backcasting – Work backward from the future you want Instead of guessing what’s next, start with a desired future state and reverse-engineer the steps to get there. LEGO wanted to dominate the educational toy market by 2032. They mapped backward—investing early in robotics, coding kits, and partnerships with schools. Apply this: Where do you want your business to be in 2030? What decisions must you make today to get there? Futures Thinking isn’t a luxury—it’s a survival skill. The future feels more uncertain than ever… Here’s a playbook to thrive (my Lighthouse Strategy): Let's begin with a simple truth: Uncertainty is the only certainty. There's a tendency to say "this time is different" with every major event, but while the specifics are always different, as a student of history, you cannot ignore the general similarities. Uncertainty has always been the norm. The one who can tolerate and embrace the most uncertainty is the one who will eventually win. To become this ONE, you first need to recognize that the Old Model (plan, execute) is broken. The New Model is a perpetual loop: • Execute: Take action, move, create, build • Adapt: Gather info, think, learn, adjust This New Model is the foundation of a mindset to thrive in an uncertain future. But the mindset alone is not enough. How do we prepare, what skills do we build, and what do we focus on to win in this uncertain future? Time to dive in on my Lighthouse Strategy... A lighthouse serves one simple but profound purpose: To guide sailors safely through uncertainty. It warns of dangers, provides orientation, and offers a single point of focus to navigate through storms or darkness. The conditions may change, but the lighthouse never does. In 2012, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos shared this insight about building for the future: "I very frequently get the question: 'What’s going to change in the next 10 years?' And that is a very interesting question; it’s a very common one. I almost never get the question: 'What’s not going to change in the next 10 years?' And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two." The lesson: It's easy to focus on what will change, but in a world where it's unlikely you will be correct, it's more important to focus on what will stay the same. Here are a few timeless human truths that will not change in the future: • Humans will want real connection • Humans will want to consume things • Humans will be seeking meaning • Humans will pay for things that reduce friction • Humans will seek out status These truths are the lighthouse. Further, there are timeless skills—those that are likely to remain valuable and relevant across a wide array of future states. I call these Lighthouse Skills: • Sales • Storytelling • Clear Communication • Emotional Intelligence • Public Speaking • Taste • Clear Thinking The goal is to focus on developing a set of skills and attributes that are relevant and valuable in a range of potential futures. Do you have a F.R.E.S.H. Mindset? To kick off 2025, I was invited to speak for the Florida Speakers Association. I was asked to share my proven recipe for breaking through mental barriers and achieving meaningful results in your career. I shared practical strategies on how to build a profitable speaking businesses, but I shared with attendees that success begins with the person in the mirror. While we often discuss and contemplate success, true achievement requires decisive action and the proper mindset. Quite simply where you mind goes, your body will follow. A F.R.E.S.H. Mindset is a success-oriented mindset. A mindset where you focus on igniting your performance and producing amazing results in your career, business, or organization. F.R.E.S.H. isn't just another acronym; it's a comprehensive approach to cooking up the results you hunger for while inspiring others to do the same. F - Focused Your brain is naturally wired to keep you safe, often triggering fight-or-flight responses when facing challenging goals. To overcome this, specificity becomes your ally. Don't simply set general objectives – clearly articulate what you want, when you want it, and how you'll achieve it. This laser focus helps identify and eliminate distractions while inspiring both you and your team. R - Resourceful Successful people don't dwell on what they lack; they maximize what they have. When facing resource constraints – whether physical, financial, or experiential – create a "shopping list" of needed resources. Replace limiting thoughts like "I don't have" with empowering statements such as "I will find" or "I can." Remember, your network is one of your most valuable resources. Always Seek Knowledge (A.S.K.) and build relationships with those who can guide you on your journey. E - Enthusiastic Your goals must excite you. The emotional connection to your desired results needs to outweigh the emotional burden of the work involved. Take time to articulate why your objectives energize you. While few people genuinely enjoy the work itself, successful professionals maintain enthusiasm by focusing on the outcomes their efforts will produce. S - Strong (Mentally Strong) Mental strength isn't innate – it's developed. Your daily content consumption, relationships, and environment significantly impact your mindset. Surround yourself with "Taste Testers." Taste Testers are trusted advisors, mentors, and accountability partners who understand your goals and aren't afraid to provide honest feedback. These individuals will challenge you to transform aspirations into reality while suggesting valuable resources for your journey. H - Honest Take personal responsibility instead of placing blame. Acknowledge that meaningful results take time and that mistakes are inevitable. View failures as growth opportunities.
