Curiosity is the job of leadership. To me, leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about staying curious. The way we work has changed, and so has leadership. Leaders who thrive today aren’t those with all the answers, but those who ask the right questions. Curiosity has become a critical leadership skill, enabling leaders to seek feedback, explore new perspectives, and adapt to rapidly changing environments. A recent Harvard Business Review piece suggests that, in today’s world, leaders must develop several essential skills: (1) Emotional Aperture: Understanding the emotional dynamics of your team, reading the room, and ensuring all voices are heard. Leaders who tune into these dynamics build stronger relationships and keep employees engaged. (2) Adaptive Communication: Great leaders adjust their style to fit the situation and audience. It’s about connecting with people, knowing when to motivate, and when to create space for creativity. (3) Flexible Thinking: In times of uncertainty, effective leaders embrace ambiguity and seek new perspectives. In my lifetime of leading people and studying the craft of leadership, I’ve observed that competence, while complex, can be broken down into three essential components: Intellectual Intelligence (IQ) - A leader’s ability to logically process information and advance decision making. Emotional Intelligence (EQ) - A leader’s ability to handle interpersonal relationships with compassion and good judgement while also being able to sense and assess the overall emotional “pulse” of the core team and the broader organization. Functional Intelligence (FQ) - A leader’s ability to cultivate sufficient expertise and skill in their field or sector. When these three parts are leveraged together in harmony, overall leadership competence is elevated. You do not have to be equally strong in each part to succeed and improve. In fact, it is in the blending of these three components that an ever-increasing level of leadership competence will emerge over time; the sum of the whole together is more powerful than the individual parts. #LeadershipThatWorks

A recent interview on ABC with LinkedIn highlighted a fundamental truth that often goes unnoticed: Communication is the No. 1 skill for professionals, especially leaders. Some leaders have initially disagreed and stated that influence, political savvy, EQ, or problem-solving is the #1. Here is why communication beats other skills: ❶ 75% of executives label communication as the top leadership skill and it's for a good reason: it is how we articulate challenges and solutions, and how we influence others. ❷ If you can't communicate effectively, you can be the best problem-solver in the world and still fail to mobilize your team around your solution. In my years of working with senior leaders and C-level executives, I have seen first-hand that communication spans a variety of challenges and wins. It enables you to get buy-in, resolve conflict, or convey challenging information in a way that allows everyone to move forward. If that's not a challenge for you, keep scrolling (congratulations!). Many think they have great communication skills, until 👉 they are repeatedly misunderstood, 👉 feel ignored, or 👉 feel 'not being heard'. If that is you, the areas to build your skills will differ from person to person. You may need to work on being more concise. You may need to work on your inner critic.
