There is a very fine line between confidence and arrogance when it comes to leadership, and it took me 7 years to understand this. We've explored resilience and adaptability so far as vital founder traits in my last 2 posts (link in comments) Now let's discuss the glue that holds it all together - leadership. Leading people is no easy feat. But it's the lynchpin for converting vision into reality. It's been said that leaders are made by followers, not the other way around. Your team has the power to either fuel or sink your rocketship. There have been times during my shopclues journey and my kindlife journey where if it were not for the right team, we would not have survived for sure. During the lows and highs, the leader derives motivation from the right team, thus becoming a better leader herself. That's why effective leadership tops my list of entrepreneur must-haves. Leadership is truly an art - and a craft we must constantly hone. Where to start? > Know your "apostles" - the people who will leave no stone unturned to make you succeed. > Build a values-driven culture that turns employees into evangelists. > Leading by example is everything. Roll up your sleeves alongside your team during crunch times. > And be human - celebrate wins, offer compassion during struggles. > Communication is oxygen. Over-communicate strategy, challenges, and changes - especially in tough times. Treat your team as adults, not babies.  Deliver bad news first, with context and clear next steps. > Create a feedback-rich environment. Listen deeply to suggestions and concerns. Regular pulse checks prevent disconnect between leadership and ground reality. Empowerment is key. Set ambitious goals, then get out of people's way and let them innovate routes to reach it. Trust their abilities. There are countless other nuances that distinguish truly transformative leaders. But at its core, leadership is about serving people to bring out their absolute best in pursuit of a unified vision. It's the foundation for turning bold dreams into blockbuster realities. I'm still learning everyday as a leader.  What leadership lessons have you learned on your founder journey? #leadership #entrepreneurship #startup #startupecosystem

Nothing could have prepared me for the joy ride of the past three months as the Launch President of BNI (Business Network International) BNI MERAKI When I took on the role of President for a founding chapter of BNI, I knew it would be a significant responsibility. But I didn’t realize just how transformative the journey would be for my own leadership style. Working with 47 entrepreneurs has pushed me to grow, adapt, and lead with more intention than ever before. Here are the three most profound ways this experience has shaped my leadership: 1. Balancing empathy with decisiveness Managing a group of diverse individuals, each with unique goals and challenges, requires a deep level of empathy. Entrepreneurs face daily struggles—be it scaling their businesses, finding new clients, or balancing personal and professional lives. As a leader, I’ve had to listen actively, understand their perspectives, and offer support. At the same time, leadership also demands decisiveness. There are moments when tough calls have to be made—whether it’s about prioritizing chapter goals or resolving conflicts. Learning to balance empathy with firm decision-making has been a crucial lesson in my leadership journey. 2. Leveraging diversity for collective success Each entrepreneur in our chapter brings a unique perspective, skill set, and approach. Initially, the diversity felt overwhelming—how could I ensure that everyone felt heard and valued? I soon realized that the key lies in embracing these differences as strengths. By fostering an environment of collaboration, I’ve seen incredible synergies emerge. Members from vastly different industries have come together to create innovative solutions and opportunities. This experience has underscored the importance of leveraging diverse talents to drive collective success. 3. Leading with clarity amidst uncertainty In any leadership role, uncertainty is inevitable. From logistical challenges to unforeseen changes in chapter dynamics, there have been moments of unpredictability. But these challenges have taught me the value of clear communication and a steady vision. When faced with uncertainty, I’ve learned to lead with transparency—sharing challenges openly while rallying the team around a common goal. This approach has not only built trust but also inspired confidence in our collective ability to adapt and thrive. These lessons aren’t confined to BNI—they’ve shaped my approach to marketing, strategy, and team management. Leading a group of entrepreneurs has given me a deeper appreciation for the power of relationships, the value of diverse perspectives, and the need for clarity in communication—all essential qualities for any leadership role. Exited founder turned CEO-coach | Helping early/mid-stage startup founders scale into executive leaders & build low-drama companies

Meet the powerhouse coaches behind Inside Out Leadership. But first, let me share something counterintuitive about great coaching: It's not the success stories that matter most - it's the scars. Here are the transformative journeys that shaped our approach to leadership: 1. The Integration Expert - Jason Pliml Most founders chase external validation, thinking it will fix everything inside. Jason did this through 5 companies over 20 years, achieving "success" while feeling increasingly fragmented. Through deep work with therapy, Buddhism, and Co-Active training, he discovered something profound: You don't need different versions of yourself for different roles. The real breakthrough happens when you bring your whole self to everything you do. 2. The Conscious Scaler - Santi Jaramillo Santi grew Bluebridge from a dorm room dream to a 50-person powerhouse, eventually selling to 15Five. But success came at a devastating price. When his co-founder quit because of his leadership style, the truth hit hard: His relentless focus on metrics was destroying the human elements that actually drive success. Through conscious leadership training, he learned that peace creates better results than pressure ever could. 3. The Vulnerability Pioneer - Micah Baldwin After 6 companies, $350M+ raised, and 4 successful exits, Micah seemed to have the blueprint figured out. But his most valuable insights came from somewhere unexpected: His raw, honest battles with sobriety and mental health. Now he helps founders navigate both the spotlighted successes and the shadows we're afraid to discuss. 4. And then there's me - The Recovering Rockstar For 15 years, I crafted the perfect CEO image - raising $20M, scaling to 20% market share, doing everything "right." Behind that polished exterior? I was losing myself entirely. It took walking away and spending 2 years finding my way back - through meditation, mindfulness, and brutal honesty - to discover something profound: The more I let go of who I thought I should be, the more effective I became. Here's what makes our coaching different: We're not consultants who studied leadership. We're not coaches who read about scaling companies. We're founders who've lived the full journey - from the highs of success to the lows of losing ourselves, and back to something more authentic. We've built a methodology that helps founders do something remarkable: Scale their companies while becoming more, not less, themselves. Because great leadership isn't about perfection. It's about authenticity. And that's a game-changing difference.

Early in my career, I thought exceptional results alone would define my success as a leader. It took watching a peer advance ahead of me to realize a powerful truth: ↳ Transformative leadership isn't just about driving results in one direction.  It is all about ensuring you engage in  "full circle leadership." This is a concept that unlocks shattering ceilings and achieving extraordinary results. This is one of the key mentorship lessons I share: Picture yourself at the center of a circle, with four crucial relationships around you: • Your team   ↳ developing and empowering those you lead • Your customers  ↳ staying deeply connected to their needs and experiences • Your peers ↳ building collaborative relationships that strengthen the whole organization • Your leaders  ↳ helping your boss and senior team achieve their objectives. The most impactful leaders I've known excel at all four simultaneously. When you focus solely on one or two areas - as I did early on by prioritizing only downward leadership - you limit not just your own growth, but your organization's potential for transformation. Since embracing full circle leadership, I've seen dramatically stronger results: → More cross-functional collaboration → Better sharing of best practices → Healthier overall organizational culture → Stronger two-way relationships at every level The truth is, no leader can transform an organization alone. Full circle leadership isn't about doing it all yourself - it's about creating connections that amplify impact in every direction. #TransformativeLeadership

In the realm of entrepreneurship and leadership, taking a unique approach can often yield extraordinary results. Instead of simply mobilizing individuals to perform tasks like gathering wood or following orders to construct a ship, an innovative leader focuses on instilling in their team a deep yearning for the boundless sea. This approach goes beyond mere instruction-based leadership and taps into the intrinsic motivation of individuals. By teaching them to yearn for the vast and endless sea, a leader transforms their team members into driven and passionate individuals who embrace challenges head-on. Rather than division of labor, this style of leadership fosters a shared vision that encourages creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Team members become inspired to think outside the box and develop new ideas that propel them towards success. An innovative leader understands that true innovation is not just about completing tasks efficiently but rather about continuous improvement and growth. This mindset empowers team members to be proactive rather than reactive, always seeking opportunities for advancement. By cultivating a sense of yearning within individuals, an entrepreneurial leader creates an environment where team members are intrinsically motivated to explore uncharted territories. It nurtures a culture of learning and adaptability that allows organizations to stay relevant in dynamic markets. In summary, an innovative leader seeks to inspire their team by teaching them to transcend simple task completion. They recognize that embracing challenges requires more than just following instructions; it entails cultivating a genuine desire for exploration, growth, and achievement. With this transformative approach, entrepreneurs can unlock potential and foster success based on individual drive and passion. Regards AMIT SHARMA

I've trained 10,000+ leaders. Here are the 6 rare traits I see in every top leader. There are 2 types of leaders: Transactional and Transformational. If you want your team to truly thrive, don't be a Transactional leader. Transactional leaders: • Maintain a strict hierarchy • Use rewards & punishments to motivate employees • Prioritize efficiency and risk avoidance over innovation • Are focused on short-term goals and maintaining the status quo • Use top-down communication, with little input from team members Transactional leaders have their benefits: they operate within existing systems, keep things running smoothly & excel at establishing clear structures and expectations. But they stifle creativity and struggle to inspire long-term employee engagement. On the reverse, the top 6 leadership traits are consistently demonstrated by Transformational leaders: 1. They challenge assumptions and encourage innovative thinking. 2. They cast a compelling vision that inspires & motivates the team. 3. They focus on encouraging employees to reach their full potential. 4. They empower team members to take ownership and calculated risks. 5. They listen to ideas from all levels and facilitate open communication. 6. They lead by example, demonstrating strong ethics & emotional intelligence. Transformational leaders aim for innovation and development, with a laser focus on future growth and excellence in rallying teams around aspirational goals. They unleash untapped potential by investing in their people and promoting a growth mindset. In today's fast-changing business landscape, Transformational leaders give organizations a major advantage. They: • Boost employee engagement, loyalty & productivity • Attract and retain top talent looking for purpose and growth • Spur game-changing innovations to stay ahead of disruption • Develop agile, resilient teams who can adapt to any challenge • Create a positive, inclusive culture of continuous improvement Reflect on your own leadership style. Are you more Transactional or Transformational? Whatever the answer, remember the top 6 traits to see your team & business thrive.
