    I FINALLY reviewed the Bitmovin 8th Annual Video Developer Report, and the data confirms what many of us have seen: AI’s biggest impact isn’t in content creation (yet)—it’s in automation and monetization. ✅ AI-powered transcription improves accessibility. ✅ Metadata tagging drives better recommendations and ad targeting. ✅ Personalization keeps viewers engaged—but is it fostering discovery or just trapping users in echo chambers? Monetization seems to be the current driver for AI in media. The focus has shifted from cost-cutting to creating new revenue streams, whether through smarter ad placement, companion apps, or commerce-to-content integration. Meanwhile, AI-generated video? Not there yet. The tech isn’t ready, and audiences still crave human storytelling.     AI is here, and once again, we’re facing a seismic shift in media. Having jumped from running legacy broadcast networks to digital platforms in Twitter’s early days, I’ve seen firsthand how technology reshapes media’s two levers: content creation and distribution. Generative AI is no different. We’re not yet at the point where AI generates blockbuster movies, but it’s democratizing high-quality content creation, empowering creators far beyond Hollywood. Just look at YouTube: it’s now the largest streaming platform on U.S. TVs, surpassing Disney+, Hulu, and Peacock combined. Creators like MrBeast outpace Netflix’s biggest shows. If MrBeast were a “show,” it would be the most popular in the world—a clear sign that platforms like YouTube aren’t just hosting creators, they’re leading entertainment. Netflix, once the disruptor, now faces disruption. Creator-driven platforms are chipping away at professionally-produced content, starting with kids (think CoComelon and Ryan’s World on YouTube) and moving into unscripted genres. AI tools like Runway and Flux could accelerate this shift, enabling creators to experiment more freely while tools like real-time translation expand global reach for non-English content. But this shift isn’t about AI replacing creative talent. The real risk lies in AI destabilizing Hollywood’s economics, shrinking budgets, and rewriting the rules that have governed the business for decades. I’ve seen this before. Teams I worked with scoffed at fans watching sports on phones, preferring 4K TVs. Then Twitter introduced an intimate, real-time fandom experience that redefined how audiences engage. Who laughed last? GenAI offers similar opportunities, from real-time rendered video to immersive, physics-defying storytelling. These features will challenge how we define quality, much like social platforms did. The question isn’t if this shift will happen—it already is.
