Effective July 1, The Joint Commission has introduced its new and revised #IPC requirements for accredited critical access hospitals and acute care hospitals. This update focuses on practices that promote patient safety and care quality to align with CDC and CMS guidelines. The new requirements include: ✅ Standard IC.07.01.01, which focuses on emergency preparedness for special pathogens such as viral hemorrhagic fevers (Ebola, Marburg), coronavirus diseases (MERS, COVID-19, SARS), and highly pathogenic influenza viruses (H5N1, H7N9) among others. ✅ Patient Care Quality, which emphasizes the importance of creating robust #IPC programs that demonstrate a commitment to patient safety, expanding their scope within the healthcare setting where IPC teams engage with stakeholders and provide consultative support to healthcare teams. ✅ Cleaning, Disinfection, Sterilization and Hand Hygiene Practices are also emphasized with a focus on establishing policies and procedures to reduce HAIs. Why is this significant? These updates highlight the importance of emergency preparedness and a more comprehensive role for infection preventionists (#IPs) in supporting practices that enhance healthcare quality and promote patient safety. The focus is shifting from engaging primarily with #nursing practice to a more comprehensive approach to infection prevention and control. I believe by adopting this proactive approach, IPC teams will encourage continuous learning, timely risk assessments, and collaboration at all levels of the healthcare setting. This will also allow stakeholders to engage more actively with their IPC teams and collaborate to implement systems that are effective in responding to outbreaks. One aspect that I appreciate about these changes is that they also imply an increased need for collaboration with public health entities to prevent disease spread within healthcare facilities. #IPs, it's time to get to know your public health colleagues if you haven't met them yet. This is great for the future of infection prevention as this will position #IPC teams from the perceived policy enforcers that they are now to essential collaborators in healthcare and active participants in patient care. Water or other cooling agents are commonly used. ✅ Class B: Flammable Liquids and Gases This category covers petroleum greases, tar, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, alcohols, and flammable gases. The extinguishing method involves creating a barrier between the fuel and oxygen. Foam is typically used for liquid fires. ✅ Class C: Electrical Fires Fires involving energized electrical equipment and appliances. Carbon dioxide (CO2) or dry chemical extinguishers are used. I recently came across an article about policies designed to protect loans, especially home loans. It brought back vivid memories of a session I conducted during the COVID wave for widows who had faced unimaginable loss. Many of them were left in dire financial crises due to inadequate or mis-sold insurance policies.
