    I worked 20-hour shifts during my residency. Forget time for family and friends, I often didn’t even have time to shower or eat. So when most of my patients talk about stress taking a toll on their health, I understand. But what we often ignore is that stress acts as your body's alert system for perceived threats. It leads you straight into survival mode - causing lack of sleep, anxiety, and countless health problems. So here are 4 simple solutions to reclaim control: ▶︎ 1. The physiological sigh: This is one of the fastest ways to calm down. - 1 deep inhale through the nose - 1 short inhale to top up - 1 long exhale to empty lungs Just 2-3 cycles of this technique will release the maximum amount of CO2, slow your heart rate and relax you. ▶︎ 2. Mel Robin’s 5-second rule: To break the cycle of anxiety and change your stress habits, simply count down from 5. 5-4-3-2-1. This exercise will: - Activate your prefrontal cortex - Interrupt your habitual thought loops - Shift your brain from fight-or-flight to action mode ▶︎ 3. The filters test: If you want to reduce stress, you need to curate your thoughts. Whenever you have a negative thought, answer these 3 questions: - Is it true? - Is it kind? - Is it helpful? If any of the answer is no, discard the chain of thought immediately. ▶︎ 4. Conquer your fear of judgment: Caring what people think is costing you your health. Choosing attachment (fitting in) over authenticity (being yourself) sets you up for long-term health issues. So forget about others' opinions. Remember, being healthy > seeking approval. These techniques actually work as our brains tend to: - Ignore the high costs of our inaction - Understate the positive results of taking action - Exaggerate negative consequences of taking action. I was met with puzzled looks until I realized: it's always 31°C in Singapore – what a pointless small talk question! When I then asked the team how they would start a meeting, they suggested asking if and what everyone had eaten. They explained, "With a full stomach, the mind is primed for productivity!" I also remember a German colleague mentioning a product launch in summer. Our Asian colleagues responded, "Which summer do you mean? Here it's always summer!" --- As we work extensively in teams across countries, intercultural competencies are more crucial than ever! Experiences like these help us become more aware of cultural differences and tailor our communication accordingly.     My candidate got 4 interview calls in a week after months of no response. All without changing her skills, her experience, or her luck. How? ✅ She just changed her resume. Recruiters don’t reject people. They reject resumes that don’t speak their language. Here’s the mistakes she made: 👉 She listed every task she has ever done (and hoped recruiters will “figure it out”). 👉 She used the same generic template from her college. 👉 She forgot that every line must scream: “I solve your problems.” Here’s what we changed and why it worked: 1️⃣ We ditched generic job descriptions. Instead of “Responsible for project management,” she wrote: “Led a 5-member team to deliver a ₹20L project 3 weeks ahead of deadline, saving 120+ hours.” 2️⃣ We made every bullet measurable. Numbers = credibility. “Improved process efficiency by 30%” beats “Helped improve processes” every single time. 3️⃣ We tailored her resume for each role. No more “one-size-fits-all.” We used keywords from the job description and mirrored the language recruiters used. 4️⃣ We optimized for ATS. Simple formatting. No tables or fancy fonts. Result? Her resume finally made it past the bots. (Pro tip: PDFs are safest, but always check the company’s instructions.) 5️⃣ We added a punchy summary at the top. 3 lines. Who she is, what she’s achieved, and what she wants next. Example: “Results-driven Marketing Analyst with 3+ years’ experience boosting campaign ROI by 40% at a leading tech firm. Awarded ‘Rising Star’ for innovative data strategies. Now seeking to drive growth at a fast-paced SaaS startup.” 6️⃣ We eliminated the clutter. No more “References available on request.” No 3-page essays. Every bullet was proof of impact. 7️⃣ We Optimized her resume for mobile. 70% of recruiters scan resumes on their phones.     Think about the last presentation you sat through. Do you remember anything from it? Probably not. Most presentations fail because they are: ❌ Overloaded with bullet points ❌ Devoid of emotion ❌ Data dumps with no clear story The good news? You can make your presentation unforgettable with these 7 simple shifts: 1. Start with a Hook, Not an Intro Most presenters begin with "I'm excited to be here today..." and lose the audience immediately. Fix: Grab attention from the start. Example: “Your company is losing $10M a year—and you don’t even know why.” 2. Tell a Story, Not Just Data People remember stories, not statistics. Instead of listing facts, wrap them in a compelling narrative. Fix: Use the “Problem → Struggle → Solution” technique. Example: "Before using our system, Sarah’s team spent 3 hours a day on reports. She tried different tools, but nothing worked—until she found our solution. Now? Just 15 minutes a day." 3. Use Contrast & Surprise The brain is wired for novelty. If your presentation sounds predictable, people will tune out. Fix: Vary your tone, pace, and visuals. Drop in an unexpected question, statistic, or pause to keep them engaged. 4. Say Less, Mean More Too much information overloads the audience. They’ll remember nothing. Fix: Cut the fluff. Stick to one core message per slide, per section, per speech. 5. Make It Visual Bullet points don’t inspire. Images and metaphors do. Fix: Instead of saying “Our product is faster,” show a race car next to a bicycle. 6. End with a Bang, Not a Fizzle Most presentations end with “Thank you” and no real impact. Fix: Leave them with one key idea and a clear next step. Example: “If you only take away one thing today, let it be this…” 7. Master the Pause Most speakers talk too fast and leave no room for ideas to sink in. Fix: Silence is power.     Cultural awareness isn’t a ‘soft skill’—it’s the difference between a win and a loss in negotiations. I’ve seen top leaders close multimillion-dollar deals and lose them, all because they misunderstood cultural dynamics. I learned this lesson early in my career. Early in my negotiations, I assumed the rules of business were universal. But that assumption cost me time, deals, and valuable relationships. Here’s the thing: Culture impacts everything in a negotiation: - decision-making, - trust-building, and - even timing. Let me give you a few examples from my own experience: 1. Know the "silent signals": In one negotiation with a Japanese client, I learned that silence doesn’t mean disagreement. In fact, it’s a sign of deep thought. It was easy to misread, but recognizing this cultural trait helped me avoid rushing and respect their decision-making pace. 2. Understand authority dynamics: Working with a Middle Eastern team, I found that decisions often come from the top, but they require the approval of key family members or advisors. I adjusted my strategy, engaging with the right people at the right time, which changed the outcome of the deal. 3. Punctuality & respect: I once showed up five minutes early for a meeting with a South American partner. I quickly learned that arriving early was considered aggressive. In that culture, relationships are built on patience. I recalibrated, arriving at the exact time, and it made all the difference. These are the kinds of cultural insights you can only gain through experience. And they can’t be ignored if you want to negotiate at the highest level. When you understand the subtle, but significant, differences in how people from different cultures approach business, you’re no longer reacting to situations. You’re strategizing based on deep cultural awareness.     Leading across borders is not just about strategy, it’s about adaptability. When I moved to the UK as an Area Manager overseeing operations across the UK, Italy, and Spain, I was stepping into a world of contrasting business cultures. What worked in one country often didn’t translate seamlessly to another. In the UK, efficiency was key. Structured work hours, quick lunches, and firm handshakes defined business interactions. In Spain, negotiations were animated and could stretch for hours; yet the same people who debated over 10 Euros would happily spend 200 on a meal, because trust was built through conversation, not contracts. In Italy, relationships drove business, deals were shaped as much by expertise as by shared values and genuine connections. Navigating these nuances taught me that success in international leadership isn’t about imposing a single leadership style, it’s about understanding, adapting, and aligning teams around a shared vision. What I’ve learned about leading globally: ✔ Cultural intelligence is a leadership skill. It’s not just about etiquette—it’s about understanding decision-making, collaboration, and motivation across different markets. ✔ Influence is built through trust. In international roles, credibility comes from fairness, consistency, and the ability to unify diverse teams. ✔ Adaptability is a competitive advantage. Business operates within cultures, not outside of them. The ability to pivot, listen, and integrate different perspectives is what drives impact. The more adaptable we are, the stronger we lead.     After 20+ years in cardiology, I’ve come to question how we approach lifestyle change. We often treat diet, exercise, sleep, and stress as separate problems, with separate solutions. But in most of the high-performing professionals I’ve worked with, that approach doesn’t hold up. The pattern I’ve observed again and again: Stress management isn’t just another "pillar" of a healthy lifestyle. It’s the foundation that underlies them all. How chronic stress quietly disrupts every domain of health: Sleep: Elevated cortisol interferes with circadian rhythms, fragments rest, and reduces deep sleep, making everything harder. Nutrition: Stress alters hunger hormones like leptin and ghrelin, increasing cravings for calorie-dense foods and lowering appetite for nutrient-rich options. Exercise: Chronic stress impairs recovery, increases injury risk, and can blunt the benefits of training. Connection: Stress narrows our emotional bandwidth, making empathy, patience, and meaningful connection harder to sustain. Coping habits: When we’re stretched thin, we reach for quick relief: caffeine, alcohol, screens, or other short-term fixes. The cascade I see repeatedly: → Sustained pressure without rest and recovery elevates baseline stress → Sleep quality deteriorates → Energy dips drive reactive food choices → Movement feels harder to sustain → Emotional connection weakens and gets put on the back burner → Coping behaviors increase → All of it loops back to amplify stress What I’ve found most helpful in practice: When patients learn to regulate their nervous system, other areas—diet, sleep, movement—often start to improve without being the primary focus. Simple stress interventions that ripple outward: • 3-minute breathing breaks between meetings • A consistent morning routine (even 5 minutes) • Brief walks outdoors • Clearer boundaries (i.e. around after-hours communication and work) • Prioritizing one meaningful connection each week The mindset shift that changed how I practice: We don’t need to perfect every pillar. We need to create the conditions, starting with learning the essential skills of stress mastery, where health can actually take root. Having faced this myself multiple times, I know that this exercise can be exhausting without a structured approach. Here’s a simple yet powerful framework that has worked for me consistently. 👇 Step 1: Capture your current state in detail (professional only or both professional + personal). ✍️ Step 2: Define your future aspirations without limitations—list everything that comes to mind! 🌠 Step 3: Identify the “swimlanes” that matter to you. These may vary, so be clear on what’s important for you. 🏊♂️ Step 4: Set milestones within each swim lane. For example, if “financial safety” is a swimlane, your milestones could include buying a house, creating a corpus of ₹X crore, etc. 🏠💰 Step 5: Establish timelines. Map out concentric zones with achievable milestones over time. ⏳ Step 6: Track your progress regularly. 📊 Having a mentor can be invaluable here, as they can act as a sounding board, providing guidance and helping you stay aligned with your goals.     Tell me what’s wrong with this picture: ➡️ An expat CEO initiates a handshake to welcome a new Emirati colleague. ➡️ The same CEO then asks to schedule a meeting with a Saudi client on a Friday at 12 PM. ➡️ Then, this CEO speaks in a direct and confrontational way to a Filipino team member. ➡️ And then, this CEO declines to meet an Indian team member’s family that was passing by the office quickly. If reading these scenarios triggered you; imagine what the person on the receiving end is experiencing. The interesting thing is, is that if you were to remove the cultural references - These scenarios would seem innocuous. CQ, or what is also known as Cultural Intelligence, is the ability to relate and work across cultures while understanding and embracing cultural differences. Today, a lack of cultural awareness is why many senior leaders are losing the respect of their teams and damaging their reputations. CQ encompasses four key components: 1️⃣ Cognitive CQ (Knowledge) - Understanding cultural norms, practices, values and beliefs. 2️⃣ Metacognitive CQ (Strategy) - Being aware of differences and adjusting your behaviour and thinking. 3️⃣ Motivational CQ (Drive) - Demonstrating an interest in learning about other cultures. 4️⃣ Behavioural CQ (Action) - Exhibiting respectful verbal and non-verbal actions when interacting with others. All four components are necessary if you want to be known as someone who respects and encourages diversity, and understands the subtle nuances that exist between cultures. By approaching cultural differences with curiosity and humility, and genuinely asking team members to share more about their cultures and preferences - You’ll create a more inclusive work culture that fosters respect, empathy and trust. #BestAdvice #Culture #Leadership
