    Formative assessment is like a compass—it is ongoing, diagnostic, and designed to guide learning. It provides students with timely, actionable feedback during the learning process so they can improve before reaching the final destination. Examples include quizzes, think-pair-share, drafts, reflections, or teacher-student conferences. Formative assessments help identify misconceptions, adjust teaching strategies, and personalise support. In this way, they build student confidence and competence incrementally. Summative assessment is more like a snapshot—it evaluates what students have achieved at the end of an instructional period. It measures mastery against learning outcomes and is used to judge the effectiveness of instruction. Examples include final exams, projects, performances, or standardised tests. While summative assessments do not provide direct guidance during the learning process, they reflect the culmination of all the formative learning and feedback that came before.

Heutagogy emphasizes: • autonomy • nonlinear exploration • reflection and adaptability • learning how to learn AME takes heutagogy further by rooting it in neuroscience, curiosity, and contribution. From Pedagogy to Heutagogy: AME’s Learning Revolution In traditional schools, pedagogy rules: the teacher leads, the student follows. In adult education, we shift to andragogy. But in Always Meaningful Education (AME), we go a step further: Heutagogy—self-determined, reflective, curiosity-driven learning. In AME: • Learners co-design their paths. • They explore what lights them up—and create something real with it. • Learning isn’t about performance; it’s about capability, contribution, and growth. This isn’t hypothetical. Since 2019, AME students have created museums, published books, launched restaurants, performed original theater, and delivered TED-style talks, among many other real world connections and contributions—all from their own inquiries. The future isn’t content recall. It’s adaptability, creativity, and the power to learn how to learn. AME isn’t just learner-centered. It’s learner-led. And that’s heutagogy in action.

    The TAPPLE Method is a classroom management and formative assessment strategy developed by Dr. Chris Biffle (Whole Brain Teaching). It’s designed to keep students actively engaged and accountable during lessons. Here’s what TAPPLE stands for: T – Teach first → Present the information or concept clearly to students. A – Ask a question → Check understanding by asking the class a question related to what you just taught. P – Pair-share → Give students time to quickly discuss their answer with a partner (this boosts participation). P – Pick a non-volunteer → Instead of calling on students who raise their hands, call on any student to answer, ensuring everyone stays alert. L – Listen → Pay close attention to the student’s response to gauge understanding. E – Effective feedback → If the answer is correct, reinforce it positively. If not, guide the student (and class) back to the correct answer without discouraging them. ✅ The goal of TAPPLE is to maintain engagement, equity, and accountability—so all students are involved in the learning process, not just the most eager ones

    An innovative approach to teaching economics that puts student learning first! As an economics educator, I've redesigned my ECO 100-semester project to embrace Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, offering students multiple pathways to demonstrate their understanding of macroeconomics. I was encouraged by Jeni Al Bahrani and her summer project on UDL as part of her doctorate degree to bring back this project. Students can choose from three engaging options: * Create a physical art piece interpreting economic concepts through visual expression * Compile an "EconSelfie" diary connecting real-world observations to classroom theories * Write a critical book review analyzing contemporary economic literature. This semester’s choices were Kyla Scanlon’s “In this Economy?” or Scott Galloway‘ “Algebra of Wealth”. This flexible approach: * Accommodates different interests * Empowers student choice and engagement * Maintains academic rigor while fostering creativity * Makes economics accessible and relevant to everyday life The results? Students are more engaged, demonstrate deeper understanding, and develop unique perspectives on economic principles. Seeing how different creative approaches can unlock complex economic concepts is amazing! I'm particularly proud of how this project breaks down barriers in economics education while maintaining high academic standards. Each option requires critical thinking and authentic application of course concepts. Feedback should be constructive, continuous, and student-centered, allowing learners to take ownership of their progress. But how can we ensure that feedback is meaningful and engaging? Here are 𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 that can help foster an effective feedback culture in your classroom: ✨ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐅𝐢𝐱 𝐈𝐭" 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 – Encourage students to maintain a list of areas they need to improve. This strategy promotes self-reflection and goal setting. ⭐ 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐡 – A simple yet powerful peer and self-assessment tool where students highlight two things they did well and one area for improvement. 💡 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐰 & 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 – Students and teachers use "Glow" (positive feedback) and "Grow" (constructive feedback) statements to guide reflection and progress. 🔄 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐥 – Students rotate in small groups, giving and receiving feedback on each other’s work, ensuring varied perspectives and deeper insights. 📝 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 – A quick and effective way to gauge student understanding at the end of a lesson. Students write reflections or questions on a sticky note before leaving. 🔍 𝐈 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐈 𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫, 𝐈 𝐒𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 – A structured reflection framework that encourages students to observe, inquire, and provide constructive feedback. 📌 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐥 – A collaborative space where students leave anonymous or named feedback on their peers' work, promoting a supportive learning environment. 🚦 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – A self-assessment tool where students use red, yellow, and green indicators to express their level of understanding and confidence in a topic. 🤝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫-𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 – One-on-one discussions between educators and students that allow for personalized feedback and targeted support.     Typical pattern: prioritising content creation while treating distribution as an afterthought. This imbalance represents a fundamental misalignment of strategic resources. The scenario plays out with remarkable consistency: Marketing teams invest considerable resources crafting elaborate content pieces. Meticulously researched whitepapers, visually striking infographics, comprehensive guides. Yet allocate minimal thought or budget to ensuring these assets reach their intended audience. During interviews I posed a straightforward budget allocation question: "How would you invest £10K for maximum impact?" The responses were disappointing. Elaborate production plans consumed 80-90% of hypothetical budgets, while distribution received no consideration. It's a professional disconnect: • 𝗖-𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲: Focused on commercial metrics—pipeline contribution, conversion efficiency, revenue attribution • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀: Optimising for production quality, volume, and creative excellence Both perspectives have merit, yet they operate in parallel rather than converge. The underlying dynamics: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 The concrete nature of content creation, which includes visible outputs and definable milestones, offers comfortable metrics for tracking progress. 𝟮. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆 • Channel orchestration • Algorithm changes • Pipeline impact It isn't easy. 𝟯. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Content teams track subjective standards of 'quality' while commercial leadership prioritises audience reach and business outcomes. The distribution-first mindset represents a more sophisticated approach to content strategy. Strategic principles for you: • Begin with audience ecosystem mapping—where does your ideal prospect already engage? • Reverse-engineer content formats optimised for native platform performance • Integrate distribution partnerships during content conceptualisation, not post-production • Design within platform constraints (most social algorithms favour zero-click content) • Establish budget allocation principles that properly weight distribution channels A strategically positioned content piece that reaches 1,000 precisely targeted prospects consistently outperforms exceptional content with little reach. The nuanced truth is that most content marketing initiatives don't underperform due to quality deficiencies, but rather because of no distribution. ----- p.s.     Theoretical Frameworks for Understanding AI's Impact on Research I'm thrilled to present our new conceptual framework that examines the transformative influence of AI on research processes and skills! We have recently released a visual model on Figshare that illustrates how AI transforms research activities throughout the entire lifecycle, from literature review to knowledge dissemination. What makes this framework unique is our integration of SIX powerful theoretical lenses that help explain these transformations: 🔄 Mode 2 Knowledge Production (Gibbons et al.) - Shows how AI accelerates the shift toward transdisciplinary, context-driven research where knowledge creation extends beyond traditional academic boundaries. 🧩 Distributed Cognition (Hutchins) - Illustrates how cognition is no longer confined to individual researchers but extends into technological systems, creating human-AI cognitive partnerships. 🌉 Boundary Objects Theory (Star & Griesemer) - Reveals how AI functions as a mediator between computational and human domains, translating across different knowledge communities. 🏗️ Knowledge Building Theory (Scardamalia & Bereiter) - Frames how iterative human-AI interactions lead to progressive knowledge advancement through collaborative meaning-making. 🔍 Post-phenomenological approaches (Ihde, Verbeek) - Examines how AI mediates researchers' relationships with their objects of study, transforming how we perceive and interact with research materials. ⚖️ Critical Realism (Bhaskar) - Provides a framework for maintaining epistemological vigilance toward AI-generated outputs, recognizing them as interpretations rather than direct representations of reality. This extends beyond simply adopting technology; it necessitates a fundamental rethinking of research expertise across various fields. As we progress into more AI-driven knowledge ecosystems, these theoretical frameworks assist us in understanding the intricate relationship between human creativity and machine abilities.
