    Tense. Awkward. Confrontational. And yet… that moment changed everything. I was once brought in to run a communication skills session for a global team. People from different countries, different time zones, different work cultures… all trying to build one product together. From the outside, they looked like a dream team. But once the session began, it became clear , something wasn’t right. Two senior team members were clearly not getting along. There was tension. Awkward silences. Eye rolls. One finally spoke up: “I keep asking for clear updates, and all I get are vague replies.” Another responded, a little hurt: “I thought I was being polite. I didn’t want to come across as too direct or rude.” That’s when it hit me: This wasn’t a performance issue. It was a communication style issue. So I stopped the session and did something simple , I introduced them to the idea of cultural communication styles: Some cultures are more direct , they say exactly what they mean. Some are more indirect , they soften their message to be respectful. In one part of the world, “We’ll try our best” means yes. In another, it might actually mean no , just said more politely. And suddenly… the room changed. They started laughing. One said, “So when you said that, you didn’t actually mean it was confirmed?” The other smiled, “No, it meant probably not , I just didn’t want to say no.” Everyone laughed. The air cleared. They began to understand each other. Not just work with each other. They didn’t need a team restructure. They needed a shared understanding of how they communicate. ⸻ 💡 The Learning: Most communication problems in global teams don’t come from ego. They come from cultural blind spots. It’s not about who’s right or wrong — it’s about knowing what the other person actually means when they speak. Soft skills like these aren’t “nice to have.” They’re the reason some global teams thrive — and others fall apart. ⸻ 💬 If your teams work across countries, cultures, and continents… Make sure they’re not speaking different languages in the same language.   • One underlying factor in some of society’s most challenging issues—health disparities, workforce gaps, and educational inequities—is the breakdown in the transfer of generational knowledge. In higher education, this is especially evident for non-traditional students, including servicemembers transitioning to the civilian sector, who bring decades of experience and unique insight into our classrooms. Consider, for instance, a military medic with years of experience providing critical care in high-stakes environments. When they separate from the service and pursue a career in the health professions, they’re often met with frustration and disappointment. Their years of expertise and practical knowledge in medical care don’t translate into meaningful credit or career advancement in the civilian healthcare system. This gap is not only frustrating but also a missed opportunity—for the individual and the healthcare workforce. To address this, higher education must evolve in ways that actively support returning adult learners and transitioning veterans: - Aggressive, Constructive Credit Awarding: We need to recognize and credit life experience and industry expertise in meaningful ways. For military medics, this means granting academic credit and pathways that honor the skills they’ve honed under pressure. - Flexible Learning Models: Learning pathways must reflect real-world constraints and diverse goals. This includes offering micro-credentials, certificates, and other targeted credentials that provide an accessible approach to education and a valuable onramp to more advanced opportunities. For many, these options offer a viable, practical path toward meaningful work without the immediate need for a full degree. Timing and life circumstances matter, and flexible options empower learners to choose what best fits their journey, allowing them to build skills progressively and re-enter formal education when the time is right. - Policies Supporting Intergenerational Learning: By promoting diverse learning environments that blend traditional students with those who have extensive real-world experience, we create richer educational experiences. This approach benefits all students, fostering an exchange of insights that’s essential to tackling society’s complex challenges. Promoting intergenerational learning requires building inclusive, supportive systems that recognize and value the expertise accumulated through life and work. By intentionally bridging the gap between military and civilian sectors and supporting veterans and adult learners in higher education, we can create classrooms that reflect the diversity of skills, perspectives, and experiences needed to address the issues of our time.     Our schools teach us a lot, from maths to history. But how well do they teach us about diversity and the value of different cultures? Many educational programmes around the world still miss out on sharing the full spectrum of global histories and cultures. This gap doesn't just limit knowledge; it also limits understanding and acceptance. So, what steps can we take to make our classrooms more inclusive from the start? 1) Diversifying Reading Materials: Instead of confining reading lists to traditional Western authors, why not introduce students to literary gems from Africa, Asia, and Latin America? Exploring varied narratives allows students to appreciate the richness of global cultures. 2) Teacher Training: Before educators can impart values of diversity and inclusion, they themselves need to be equipped. Regular workshops addressing unconscious biases and strategies for fostering inclusive classrooms can be transformative. 3) Incorporate Global Histories: Instead of a Eurocentric approach, curriculums could weave in histories from different continents, highlighting achievements, struggles, and contributions that shaped the modern world.
