Coalitions for addressing climate security

Summary

Coalitions for addressing climate security are partnerships among countries, organizations, and sectors that work together to tackle the risks climate change poses to safety, livelihoods, and international stability. These groups combine resources and expertise to develop joint strategies, strengthen resilience, and drive coordinated climate action across borders.

  • Strengthen shared action: Build partnerships with diverse stakeholders to address climate risks that affect multiple countries or sectors and create unified solutions.
  • Align goals and resources: Set clear, common objectives and pool expertise or funding to ensure climate security efforts are well-coordinated and impactful.
  • Promote ongoing collaboration: Encourage open communication and long-term planning so coalitions can adapt to new challenges and measure progress over time.

✋ Read the latest report from Global Climate Policy Project at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, "Building a Climate Coalition: Aligning Carbon Pricing, Trade, and Development". 🌍 Building a Climate Coalition for a Fairer, Stronger Climate Response With COP30 approaching in Brazil, fragmented climate action and rising trade tensions highlight the need for a new approach. A coalition of countries aligning on carbon pricing and trade could accelerate decarbonization 💡 Core Idea Member nations would set a carbon price floor for emissions-intensive industries (steel, cement, aluminum, fertilizers) and apply border carbon adjustments (BCAs) to imports. This levels the playing field, curbs carbon leakage, and incentivizes broader participation 📊 Key Findings 🌱 7x greater emission cuts than current policies—equivalent to Canada’s total annual emissions. 💵 $200 billion in annual revenues—mostly from domestic carbon pricing. ⚖️ Manageable costs—steel (+4–6%), aluminum (+11–15%), cement (+5–23%), fertilizers (+10–13%). 🏭 Minimal output losses (<2% across industries), avoiding competitiveness shocks 🤝 Equity & Inclusion Low- and middle-income countries benefit via: Climate finance and capacity-building. Preferential market access. Support for clean technology adoption and regulated carbon offsets 🔎 Next Steps Coalition governance must ensure transparency through robust MRV systems. Early dialogue is key before the EU CBAM expands in 2026 ❓ Do you think countries will agree on a graduated carbon price (based on income levels), or is a uniform global price the only way forward? #CarbonPricing #Trade #ClimateCoalition #Decarbonization #COP30 #SustainableDevelopment

When countries work together, supported by strong coalitions and partnerships, we can turn shared risks into shared progress. In the Western Balkans, support from the Adaptation Fund has enabled Albania, Montenegro & North Macedonia to join forces in tackling floods in the Drin River Basin – a challenge that knows no borders. With UNDP and partners, and building on earlier efforts supported by the Global Environment Facility, this initiative truly highlights the power of partnerships to meet transboundary climate challenges and advance shared climate goals. The results speak for themselves: More than 30 new or upgraded hydrometeorological stations are improving flood forecasting and early warning. Thousands of hectares of farmland and communities are better protected through rehabilitated embankments and drainage systems. And for the first time, Albania, North Macedonia & Montenegro have a joint flood risk management strategy, backed by shared data, aligned with EU standards, shaped by community voices, and paired with a five-year action plan to reduce vulnerability across borders. See the work in photos: https://lnkd.in/e-hgzK9C This is proof that partnerships are one of the most powerful defenses we have against climate change. Transformative Collaboration in Action! I. Insufficiency Despite growing global commitments, the level of investment mobilised for climate and nature solutions still falls far short of what is needed. Individual efforts cannot meet the scale of the climate and nature crises II. Radical Collaboration To meet today’s challenges, we need radical collaboration – at speed and at scale. This means possessing not just a readiness to partner across sectors and silos, but the capabilities to establish, execute and scale-up transformative partnerships. III. Opportunity The power of philanthropic capital to catalyse change, combined with corporate leadership and government-led policy action, creates a unique opportunity to unlock investment, align efforts and drive the world towards a net-zero, nature-positive future. IV. Collaboration Models 1. Joint Ventures and Strategic Alliances Businesses in the same industry or value chain collaborate to enhance sustainability → Success depends on fair representation, shared decisions, long-term commitment, and supportive external conditions 2. Industry-wide Alliances Member-based coalitions across or within sectors pursue shared goals → Key factors include balancing broad reach with deep engagement, setting clear objectives, realistic targets, and fostering long-term member involvement 3. Cross-sector Partnerships Collaborations among public, private, and philanthropic entities to drive policies, infrastructure, and initiatives → Success relies on stakeholder alignment, impact measurement, clear communication, and scalability V. Lessons Learned  1. Establishing collaboration Start small with committed members or leverage existing platforms to gain momentum 2. Building trust and measuring impact Use structured governance to build trust and transparency. Measure impact with a flexible, progress-focused approach 3. Expanding and deepening collaboration Design for scalability from the outset VI. Enablers 1. Clear strategy and ambition 2. Cross-functional alignment 3. Collaborative mindset and culture 4. Long-term planning and flexibility 5. Dedicated resourcing, capabilities and skills Check out this insightful report by World Economic Forum and Kearney (with case studies from the Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) Awards winners) here: https://lnkd.in/dRQHa_g4 —— For regular updates on Transformative Innovation, make sure to follow us here: The Futuring Alliance The Futuring Alliance unites visionaries across business, policy, science, and society who believe the best way to predict the future is to shape it – together #innovation #transformativeinnovation #systems #systemschange #ecosystems #collaboration #partnerships #alliances #JVs #strategy #climate #sustainability

Here’s my latest piece published by the World Economic Forum, where I explore why India, Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia (IBSA+Indonesia) matters for global climate and energy leadership: • These four democracies represent 2.5 billion people, $7 trillion in GDP, and 12% of global emissions—bringing unmatched diversity of experience in energy systems, governance, and industrial strategies. • As multilateralism comes under stress and climate finance remains unevenly distributed, IBSA+Indonesia offers bold South–South collaboration anchored in shared values and practical action. • From clean tech supply chains to reforming global norms and finance systems, this coalition has the potential to fill critical gaps and deliver real impact.
