I used to walk through the door at 9 p.m., smelling like dust and concrete, boots still caked with mud. My kids were already asleep. My wife was tired of hearing me say, “Honey, it’s just a hard time right now.” Weekends? Gone. PTO? Didn’t happen. Balance? Forget it. That was me—working all the time as a Superintendent. What shook me was when Kate said one time, "It's always a busy time. We will just go without you." 😳 I was devastated. And decided to make a change. I went from missing family dinners to taking PTO, working standard hours, and actually being present for my kiddos. Here’s the pattern that made the difference: Top 10 Habits for Work–Life Balance in Construction ↗️ Schedule Your PTO at the Beginning of the Year - (Family time is a milestone. Put it on the calendar first and guard it.) ↗️ Create a Coverage Plan for All PTO - (Peace of mind comes when the project can stand without you. Build that into the culture.) ↗️ Prioritize Stability with Standard Meetings - (Fire drills steal your evenings. Rhythm and consistency with communication give them back.) ↗️ Make Planning Visual and Clear - (Get it out of your head. Put it on boards so others can lead in your absence.) ↗️ Time Block Your Days - (Protect deep work, meeting rhythms, and family transitions.) ↗️ Have Morning & Afternoon Routines - (Start with intention. End with a reset so you walk through the door calm, not chaotic.) ↗️ Go on a Weekly Date Night - (The foundation at home matters more than any foundation you place on site.) ↗️ Schedule Your Health Appointments (and Keep Them) - (Doctor. Dentist. Therapy. Don’t wait until you’re broken.) ↗️ Keep Leader Standard Work - (Daily, weekly, monthly checklists keep you proactive—not reactive.) ↗️ Create Buffers in Your Plan - (Don’t jam every minute. Leave space for calls, surprises, and just breathing.) Construction doesn’t have to cost you your family. It doesn’t have to cost you your health. If you drive your project with stability and a lot of discipline with planning—while protecting these habits—you can win both at work and at home. 💡 Which of these habits do you already use? Which one do you need most right now? Love, J$

The second most common question I answered in 2023 was, “you do so much, how do you balance it all?” The truth is that I don’t. I believe work and life balance is a myth. Instead I subscribe to a philosophy of work and life alignment and the difference isn’t simply semantics. Work & Life alignment is an active practice that recognizes that at times some priorities require more energy/focus. It’s not a magical approach. It requires clarity, consistency, community, and exceptional communication. It has not been easy for me to achieve because above all it also requires admitting personal limitations, relying on others, and SO much planning. It’s worth it! Done correctly it’s almost like having a Time Machine—- almost. Here are a few tips on how to get started. 💪🌍✨ 1️⃣ Set Clear Priorities: Define your goals and values, both personally and professionally. Clarify what truly matters to you and ensure your actions align with your priorities. This clarity will guide your decisions and help you navigate the path of work-life harmony more effectively. Know your “thrive zone” and maximize the time you spend there. ⚖️❤️ 2️⃣ Cultivate Boundaries: Establish healthy boundaries between work and personal life. Learn to prioritize self-care without guilt and create dedicated time for family, hobbies, and personal growth. By setting clear boundaries, you create space for all aspects of your life to flourish. Self-care IS NOT selfish! 🌸🌳 3️⃣ Foster Inclusion: Embrace diversity and foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. (Having people in your life whose thrive zones are your shadow zones is transformative!) Encourage collaboration, actively seek diverse perspectives, and create opportunities for growth and development for all. Together, we can achieve incredible results through the power of inclusion. 🌈🚀 4️⃣ Be Intentional: Live with intention and purpose in all that you do. Regularly assess your goals, values, and aspirations. Ensure that your work aligns with your higher purpose, bringing fulfillment and joy to your professional journey. Remember, intentional actions lead to meaningful outcomes. Leave room for chaos- life is not always neat 🎯✨ 5️⃣ Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network. Seek mentors, coaches, and like-minded professionals who can guide and inspire you on your journey. Embrace opportunities to learn and grow, and never hesitate to ask for help when needed. Together, we can achieve greatness. 🤝💼 6️⃣ ACTIVELY AVOID TIME SPONGES!!! Sometimes saying goodbye is the best productivity tool! By implementing these best practices, we can create a work-life alignment that nurtures our well-being, enhances our professional performance, and uplifts those around us. It’s amazing how much you can get done this way #WorkLifeAlignment #InclusionBestPractices #IntentionalLiving #Success #PassionAndPurpose

As someone deeply immersed in the dynamic world of software engineering, I've often pondered the age-old question: How do we strike the right balance between our professional and personal lives? 🤔💻🌳 Here are a few strategies that have proven invaluable on my journey: 1️⃣ Prioritize and Plan: Start by clearly defining your priorities both at work and in your personal life. This could involve setting goals for both realms and creating a schedule that aligns with your values. 2️⃣ Effective Time Management: Master time management techniques to boost productivity. Tools like the Pomodoro Technique or time-blocking can help you stay focused during work hours, leaving room for personal pursuits. 3️⃣ Establish Boundaries: It's crucial to set boundaries between work and personal time. Define when your workday ends and commit to unplugging. This ensures you're mentally present for your loved ones and personal interests. 4️⃣ Use Technology Wisely: Leverage technology to your advantage. Utilize project management tools to streamline tasks at work, and also consider digital well-being apps to help you detach from your devices during leisure. 5️⃣ Invest in Self-Care: A healthy mind and body are essential for sustained success. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and moments of mindfulness can rejuvenate your energy levels, making you more effective in both spheres. 6️⃣ Learn to Say No: While enthusiasm for work is commendable, it's crucial to recognize your limits. Politely decline additional tasks if they jeopardize your work-life balance. Remember, quality often outweighs quantity. 7️⃣ Continuous Communication: Keep the lines of communication open with your colleagues, superiors, and family. Discuss expectations and any challenges you may face in maintaining equilibrium. A supportive network can make a world of difference. Achieving the perfect balance is an ongoing journey, and it's unique to each individual. It's about finding what works best for you and adapting as circumstances evolve. Last year, I was responding to emails at 11 PM (again) While my dinner got cold on the counter (again). That was my wake-up call. I wasn't living life—I was working through it. Sound familiar? My story might be yours too. We're told there's a perfect work-life balance. But here's the reality: There's no perfect balance. There's just life—and how you choose to live it. Here's how I took control in 5 steps: 1. Setting firm boundaries ↳ I turned off work notifications after 6 PM. 2. Ruthless prioritization ↳ Not everything needs doing—ask: "Will this matter in a week?" 3. Regular breaks ↳ Even ten-minute walks reset your brain—schedule them. 4. The power of "no" ↳ Saying no to non-essential meetings opened up my calendar for what matters. 5. A consistent routine ↳ Starting the day at 6 AM gives me peaceful, uninterrupted time. The results? More energy. Better work. Deeper relationships. And most importantly—a life that's lived, not just worked through. Don't wait for burnout to be your wake-up call. Start making changes today. The moment I stopped treating my life like a never-ending race, everything changed for the better. A few years ago, I was always pushing myself to work harder and longer, thinking it would lead to more success. But the truth? I was burning out, fast. After a particularly tough week, I realized that I was missing out on life. My relationships were suffering, my health was getting worse, and my creativity was fading, which was a big deal for my job. That's when I learned that work-life balance isn't just a trendy phrase—it can completely change your life. Here's how I turned things around, by following these do’s and don’t’s and how you can do it too: Do's - 1. Ask for help when needed. Trust me, you don’t have to do everything yourself. 2. Short, frequent breaks during work can boost productivity and reduce stress. 3. Disconnect from work emails and social media after work to recharge. 4. Exercise, eat well, and sleep. You can’t pour from an empty cup. 5. Plan your day, set goals, and manage your time efficiently. 6. Define clear work hours and stick to them. Don’ts - 1. Know your limits. It's okay to say "no." 2. It's time for a change if you're feeling overwhelmed. 3. Create a separation between work and personal life. 4. Don't Aim for Perfection. Aim for progress, not perfection. 5. Your family and friends are important support systems. Don't ignore them. 6. Working through lunch or skipping breaks doesn't make you more productive. It took time, but little by little, I felt more energized, creative, and connected to the things and people I care about. My career didn't just survive—it thrived. And yours can too. Balance isn't about doing everything; it's about doing what matters most. What's one small change you can make today to improve your work-life balance? Everyone on social media tells you to "prioritize work-life balance". But almost nobody shares the "how". If they won't, I will… So, here’s how I prioritize my business and family time in 6 simple steps: Step 1 - Set clear boundaries. Example ↳ Limit work hours to 9 am to 7 pm. Step 2 - Streamline operations. Example ↳ Automate processes like invoicing or scheduling. Step 3 - Delegate tasks. Example ↳ Hire a virtual assistant to handle admin duties. Step 4 - Embrace flexibility. Example ↳ Work from home on days you can to avoid rush hour traffic. Step 5 - Prioritize self-care. Example ↳ Block out time for exercise/leisure reading/etc.. Step 6 - Review regularly. Example ↳ Assess your work-life priorities monthly and adjust as needed. Balancing business and family time is a conscious decision that demands consistency and adaptability. But with a little intentional planning, you can be your best, both on and off the clock. Does your work-life balance need a review? What’s the first change you will make?

Work-life balance is something that you must take, it won’t always be given to you. If you let it, work can take over. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you're working towards a personal goal. However, this isn’t sustainable. I’ve seen female friends and colleagues particularly struggle with this, as we seem to think we can manage to say yes to everyone and everything all the time! Ultimately, it’s on each of us to be realistic about how much our bodies and minds can keep up with. It’s on us to set our boundaries. If there's a boundary you need to set at work, here's how to approach it with your team/ boss ⬇️ 1. Seek a private conversation with your manager/boss. - Be respectful but decisive about the boundaries you want to set. - Seek their take on it, and ask what they think about your request. - Be clear about what’s important to you, and be specific in your asks. Eg; “I’d like to block out an hour every evening for the gym”, or “I need to pick up my kids from school at 3 pm, so please don’t book any meetings then”. - The most important thing is open and honest communication, remember: they can’t give you what they don’t have clarity about. 2. Let your team and colleagues know how you like working, when you work, where you prefer working, how you like your feedback, and so on. 3. Have these conversations in person where you can to avoid any misunderstandings. 4. Once agreed, try to get these things in writing, the key here is to ensure everyone’s on the same page. Hope this blueprint is useful for you to have the work-life balance that you’d like to have!
