The new director of the SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program, Tiffany K Harrison, Ph.D., said during the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring that today’s scholars carry the “shared responsibility to shape a more just and compassionate future” at this pivotal time in graduate and higher education. She succeeded Dr. Ansley Abraham as the SREB program’s director back in the summer. Dr. Harrison said her goal is “not to fill his shoes, but to carry the torch forward.” The goals of the SREB scholars program — and the Institute — are clear: supporting Ph.D. students as they complete their degrees, helping graduates become outstanding faculty members and researchers who earn tenure, and encouraging scholars to serve as effective mentors, Dr. Harrison said.

At the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring, we honored Dr. Ansley Abraham, the founding director of the SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program and a mentor to many, with the prestigious Frank Abbott Award for his dedication to the SREB program and the Institute. Dr. A’s vision has enabled thousands of doctoral scholars to participate in the Institute over the past 32 years — and for more than 1,300 underrepresented students to complete doctoral degrees in the SREB program alone. Many graduates have become professors, researchers, higher ed leaders, and mentors to other scholars. Dr. Abraham retired from SREB this summer. The SREB program and Institute provide “spaces where every voice matters and is heard,” Dr. Abraham said. “Where brilliance is shared, all rise.” #inst2025 (Photos by @cwstudiosatl)

The 32nd Institute on Teaching and Mentoring #INST2025 is happening now in Atlanta. The gathering of more than 800 doctoral students, faculty, and higher ed leaders is one of the nation’s largest conferences on strengthening the Ph.D. and college faculty pipeline and increasing student success. Our opening speakers focused on how future and current college faculty members and higher education leaders can continue to open doors of opportunity for students even in challenging times. SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program Director Tiffany Harrison told the Institute audience that scholars carry the “shared responsibility to shape a more just and compassionate future” at this pivotal time in graduate and higher education. We celebrated “graduation” for 30 SREB and Sloan scholars who completed their doctoral degrees in the past year. Many of these outstanding graduates are now tenure-track professors at colleges and universities across the country (or soon will be). They’ll touch countless students’ lives, joining the more than 1,300 total SREB program graduates already working in education and related fields. What does the Institute mean to you? More to come from Atlanta!
