In this feature of The Moneris Mosaic, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Wayne Chen (he/him). Wayne began his Moneris career on the Product team, spending 16 months as an intern where he honed his skills and built strong connections. Today, he continues to grow and contribute to his full-time role as a Client Consultant 1, helping merchants integrate eCommerce solutions and guiding them toward the right products for their business needs.

Now, almost a year into his full-time role, Wayne reflects on his transition from Intern to Client Consultant 1 and shares what helped him along the way. His story highlights the importance of making meaningful contributions, building strong relationships, and expressing interest early—insights that can resonate with interns considering their next steps.

1. What motivated you to choose Moneris for your internship and return for a full-time role?

I first explored an internship at Moneris because I was already familiar with the company—my father had a great experience using Moneris as a merchant, which made the opportunity feel more personal. I chose to return full-time because I genuinely enjoyed the team culture during my internship and saw the role as a strong fit to support my long-term career goals.

2. What would you say is one skill you have developed further?

The skill I’ve developed the most is communication. Being part of a client-facing team means communication is central to my role, and I’ve gained a lot of valuable experience through daily interactions with merchants and colleagues.

3. Can you share a proud moment during your time at Moneris that helped shape your career journey?

One of my proudest moments was creating team documentation for the new subscription feature of the Moneris API. It was a great learning experience, and I was proud to contribute something that helped the team and improved our internal knowledge sharing.

4. What advice would you give to someone hoping to turn their internship into a full-time role?

Make an impact on the team you’re working with and take time to build relationships with your co-workers. Additionally, you should express interest in the full-time role early on.
