Building a Reliable 8-Channel LoRaWAN Gateway with Raspberry Pi CM4 and RAK5146 Over two years ago, I designed and assembled a custom 8-channel LoRaWAN gateway as a demo setup for an early-stage IoT project. The gateway is built using a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4), a Quectel EG95 cellular module, and the @RAKwireless RAK5146 concentrator. The goal was to create a stable, scalable, and efficient LoRaWAN gateway that could serve as a foundation for larger IoT deployments. This gateway has been running continuously and flawlessly for more than two years, managing a network of over 600 LoRaWAN nodes, and providing reliable coverage up to 3 km. It seamlessly connects to ChirpStack, The Things Network (TTN), and even private LoRaWAN servers. On the node side, I used the RAK3172 module — a robust and highly efficient LoRaWAN solution that perfectly complements the system. This project clearly demonstrates how, with the right design approach and proper module selection, combined with the comprehensive documentation and developer support provided by @RAKwireless, a truly reliable IoT infrastructure can be achieved.
