🚨 Hiring Scam Awareness — A Real Example from This Week Earlier this week, we had an interview for one of the open positions on my team. - On the left is the LinkedIn profile photo of the applicant. - On the right is the actual individual who joined the interview call. They were not the same person. This kind of identity fraud has become disturbingly common, especially for remote positions. Some applicants use stolen photos, fake résumés, and even AI-generated voices or backgrounds to pass screening interviews. Others attempt to subcontract the job or gain internal access once hired. 🔍 Why this matters: Hiring scams have increased by more than 250% since 2022, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed continue to battle fake profiles, but the issue is growing. 🧭 Tips for hiring teams: • Always confirm identity with live video and (when appropriate) a brief ID check. • Verify voice, background, and communication consistency with the LinkedIn profile. • Keep all communication inside official company channels — never WhatsApp or Gmail. We all want to believe in the integrity of our industry, but awareness is now part of due diligence. Stay sharp, verify early, and protect your teams.

If you're a recruiter or TA leader and you haven't changed your LinkedIn password in a while — consider this your reminder. With LinkedIn's great decision to now require recruiters to verify their accounts, scammers are pivoting fast to personal emails, fake redirects, and now hijacked accounts. I'm now seeing an increase in very experienced and respected TA leaders and recruiters at well-known companies have their LinkedIn accounts compromised recently. Scammers then use their actual profiles to message candidates — sometimes those actively in process — impersonating them to run scams to steal data or even identities. This is becoming a real issue, and it’s not enough to put the responsibility only on candidates to “check the domain" when receiving recruiter emails or outreach. Scammers are evolving their tactics as fast as technology is advancing right now. Between AI, phishing tools, and organized groups (even some backed by foreign intelligence agencies), the hiring process itself is becoming one of the biggest gaps in corporate security. Be vigilant. Change your passwords often. Enable 2FA. And remember — none of us are immune. Almost everyone’s data has been stolen multiple times over, and recruiters are now prime targets because of the trust we naturally build with candidates in the hiring process.

We're tracking a 40% spike in sophisticated recruitment fraud this year. As someone who monitors risk patterns across thousands of placements, I'm seeing scammers evolve faster than our industry's defenses. They're no longer targeting just desperate job seekers—they're systematically hunting experienced professionals. AI tools are helping fraudsters craft convincing job posts, clean communication, and even mimic legitimate company processes. What worries me most? The remote work angle. When someone's been searching for months, that "perfect" work-from-home opportunity can override years of professional judgment. Three verification steps I recommend to every candidate: • Never engage with recruiters who won't video call • Independently verify company domains (not the links they send) • Ask specific questions about team structure and hiring managers Real recruiters welcome scrutiny. Scammers vanish when questioned. The talent market is competitive enough without candidates having to play detective. What percentage of applicants are fraudulent? I was shocked to learn that it's around 30-50% (especially for remote roles!) Misrepresenting skills, lying about experiences, or fake reference are nothing new - this is why companies have methods in place to validate skills through assessments, verify the identity of references, etc. But the current state - different people showing up throughout the interview, the person who shows up on day one being a different person from the one who interviewed, people using AI filters to misrepresent their identity or to feed them answers to try and game an interview is a new challenge. Of course some folks are just trying to game the system to land a job in a difficult job market. But there are also bad actors who are looking to gain access to private data or destroy systems and that's a huge risk for employers (and all of us who trust these companies to protect our data). This was a big topic of discussion at Talent Connect this week, and here's what some companies are doing: - Checking email history - Checking for VPN usage - Using IP addresses to verify location - Using AI screeners that also monitor for use of additional tools, whether you're reading from a script, etc. - Asking candidates to share their background or share their entire screen - Checking your LinkedIn - Using tools like CLEAR or ID me to to verify identify - Recording interviews or taking pictures of candidates at each stage - Having people show their ID on screen and using facial recognition software to ensure a match - Requiring an in person interview as part of the job, even if the job is remote Does some of this feel invasive to an applicant, particularly when most people are doing the right thing and just trying to get a job? Yes, I would imagine so. Do I think companies are going to prioritize candidate experience at the expense of their own security? Absolutely not. The risk of a company accidentally hiring a bad actor is far greater than them declining someone great for their role who doesn't like their hiring process. My advice to jobseekers: 1. You need to do your due diligence.  Multiple times every day, I see people falling for scams. And some of the practices above are great ways for scammers to take advantage of jobseekers. So before actually clicking links, showing your ID, or taking an interview, make sure you're communicating with a legitimate employer. 2. Maintain an active LinkedIn.  Include a profile picture, post every now and then, have connections from former employers or classmates. 3. Decide what you're comfortable with Personally, if I want to work at a company and trust that company, I'm gonna do the AI interview or their ID verification. If you don't want to, that's OK, but know it could mean being disqualified. 4. Don't do things that make you look fake If your application looks like the ones submitted by bots, they may assume you're a bot.

I’m definitely finding it interesting that job seekers have been told for years that we need to keep up with the times. Stop using paper resumes. Re-enter your work history into workday 10,000 times. Use LinkedIn and online networking tools because there are fewer job fairs and in-person events. Use AI tools to make your resume and application materials perfectly matched to the job description. But now we are also being asked to do the work of proving we are humans because all these less human systems can be exploited by bad actors with robots. 🤦♀️

🛑 'Open To Work' Beware Phishing at Work on LinkedIn! 🛑 On Friday, I commented on a LinkedIn post and was swiftly approached by someone called Alex.T, out of the blue, inviting me to apply for an HR role. The message was vague, so I asked for more details via email. Within minutes, an email arrived from Sandra Carr—complete with job description, salary info, and a company logo in the signature. Since when did anybody respond like this, especially early on Friday evening? But here’s the kicker: 🔍 No trace of Sandra on the company’s LinkedIn page 🔗 Her email signature included a LinkedIn link that doesn’t work 🚫 No formal application link—just a prompt to reply directly 🧠 Gut feeling said: something’s off Fast forward to today: Alex.T has blocked me. No follow-up. No explanation. Just digital tumbleweed. Luckily, it didn't progress to submitting an online application. If you’re using the green “Open to Work” banner, be aware that it can make you a target for phishing and scam tactics. These actors prey on urgency, hope, and trust. ✅ Always verify: Does the person or offer look credible? Can you find multiple employees from that company on LinkedIn? Do they have a company phone number? Is the job posted on their official careers page? Stay sharp. Stay safe. And don’t let scammers exploit your job search. #opentowork #scams #hr
