Both HR and OD are obsessed with data. But they're not looking at the same data. And they shouldn't be. HR uses data to manage the workforce. Tracking: → Turnover rates and retention patterns → Time to fill and cost per hire → Engagement survey scores → Benefits utilization → Compensation benchmarking → Training completion rates It's people analytics focused on individual employee metrics aggregated up. Critical for running the organization. But it doesn't tell you if your organization is actually capable of executing strategy. That's where OD data comes in. OD uses data to diagnose organizational systems. Measuring: → Decision making velocity and quality → Cross functional collaboration effectiveness → Speed of information flow → Psychological safety in teams → Alignment between stated values and actual behaviors → Change readiness and adaptive capacity It's behavioral science applied to organizational dynamics. Both are right. Both are necessary. Both are looking at different layers of the same organization. You need people metrics AND system metrics. You need operational data AND behavioral data.
