Renault and Geely extend cooperation on zero emission vehicles in Brazil

Renault Group and GEELY have signed agreements to extend their strategic cooperation to the production and sales of zero and low-emission vehicles by Renault do Brasil for the Renault and Geely Auto brands in Brazil. As part of these agreements, Geely formally acquires a 26.4% stake in Renault do Brasil, with Renault Group remaining the majority shareholder and continuing to consolidate the entity in its accounts. As a minority shareholder, Geely now has access to Renault do Brasil’s industrial and commercial resources, allowing it to accelerate its expansion in the region’s leading automotive market. Renault Group has confirmed that it has “executed definitive agreements” with China-based automotive manufacturer GEELY, extending the two companies’ “strategic cooperation” in Brazil. These agreements have seen Geely formally acquire a 26.4% stake in Renault do Brasil, with Geely vehicles to be produced alongside Renault vehicles at Renault's Ayrton Senna plant in São José dos Pinhais. Mazda has effectively lost the right to repurchase its 50% stake in its former joint automotive production venture in Vladivostok. The stake was originally transferred to the Russian partner Sollers in October 2022 for a symbolic sum of one euro, under an agreement that allowed Mazda to buy back the share within three years on the same terms. However, the Russian side stated that no request from Mazda regarding the buyback has been made, and no interest in such a transaction is expected under current conditions. This development marks the first known case in which a global automotive manufacturer has been formally deprived of the option to return to its Russian industrial assets after exiting the market. The Vladivostok plant, opened in 2012 as a joint venture between Mazda and Sollers, initially assembled Mazda vehicles. After Mazda’s departure, production was repurposed: first to manufacturing pickup trucks under the Sollers brand, and later to assembling tourist buses using Chinese components—reflecting the broader reorientation of Russia’s automobile sector toward domestic and Asian supply bases. Senior Russian officials had previously signaled that Mazda was unlikely to exercise its buyback option. In early September, the First Deputy Prime Minister noted that Sollers had successfully relaunched operations at the facility in 2023 and is currently producing a “unique and in-demand product for the Russian market,” implying no strategic need for Mazda’s return.

Geely Acquires 26.4% Stake in Renault Brazil On November 3, Geely Auto issued an announcement stating that Geely Holding Group and Geely Automobile Holdings (collectively referred to as "Geely") have signed an agreement with Renault Group to hold a 26.4% stake in Renault Brazil.   According to the agreement, Geely will acquire a 26.4% stake in Renault Brazil, while Renault Group will continue to hold its position as the controlling shareholder and consolidate the financial statements. As a minority shareholder, Geely will conduct localized production at Renault Group’s Ayrton Senna Industrial Park in Brazil and sell new energy vehicles (NEVs) under the Geely brand by leveraging Renault Brazil’s existing distribution network. It is understood that the Geely EX5 (known domestically as the Yinhe E5) will be sold through Renault’s full network of dealership.   Through this cooperation, Renault will be able to expand its product lineup using advanced new energy technologies to meet the electrification demand in the Brazilian market. This will also help Renault Brazil improve its production capacity utilization and further enhance the competitiveness of the industrial park.   This move marks a crucial step in the strategic synergy between the two automakers in the Latin American market. By acquiring a stake in Renault Brazil, Geely will leverage Renault’s existing production and distribution network in Brazil to accelerate its expansion in South America. Currently, Renault Brazil has already introduced the Geely EX5 to the Brazilian market through brand-exclusive stores operated under the Renault network.   This cooperation is expected to enable Renault to launch more competitive models in the Brazilian market, enrich its product lineup, and increase its market share. Meanwhile, Geely will also be able to accelerate the expansion of its own brand in South America by leveraging Renault’s market foundation and brand recognition in Brazil.   Geely and Renault have a long-standing cooperative relationship. As early as 2021, the two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a cooperative relationship and define a long-term strategic partnership, initially focusing on the development of hybrid vehicles for the Chinese and South Korean markets.   In January 2022, Geely and Renault signed a framework agreement, specifying the joint development of internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicles for the South Korean market. In May of the same year, Geely subscribed for a 34.02% stake in Renault Korea for RMB 1.376 billion, completing the equity binding. In addition, the two parties jointly established HORSE Powertrain Limited, with each holding a 50% stake.
