The State Taxation Further Amendment Act 2025 received Royal Assent yesterday, 25 November 2025. It makes a number of changes to the land tax laws which Victorian landowners and their advisors should be aware of, including changing the annual Vacant Residential Land Tax (VRLT) reporting date from 15 January to 15 February with effect from 2026. This is a welcome change, as it means that the VRLT reporting deadline now falls outside of the holiday period, meaning landowners can relax over the summer holidays. Remember though that if you are relaxing in your own holiday home, then unless you already have a VRLT exemption from last year in place for property, you'll need to attend to the VRLT notification and claim an exemption after you return home and before 15 February!
