- One-on-ones are the time you get with your manager to talk about everything that's going on in your job, your team, your company, and your industry. You know you need to address what's on the near term horizon First. These are the pop-up windows in your brain and your manager's brain. Getting them handled first enables you to both think about more long reaching priorities. Unfortunately, a lot of one-on-ones end after talking about the near term and that cost you so much. When one-on-ones are nothing more than immediate status updates, you are likely missing out on opportunities. So in your one-on-one, after you go through your current updates, you want to be hitting two important categories. First, the long-term horizon. Think about and discuss the trajectory of your industry, the purpose of your organization, and your unique skills.
