Let's take a moment to look at a practical application of four of the most popular blend modes for compositing images together, Multiply, Screen, Overlay, and Soft Light. First we'll take a look at Multiply. I'll target the edge layer and make that visible. Now the Multiply blend mode multiplies the top layer with the layers underneath, and the resulting color will always be darker and white will disappear. So when I change the blend mode from normal to multiply, we still see the dark black edges, but most of the white disappears. In fact, all of the white disappears, but we can still see some of the grayscale values that are in the edge file. This is great for blending edges like this, and also when overlaying pencil or ink drawings over new backgrounds. All right, let's go to the image menu and I'll choose adjustments and let's invert this layer. So now whatever was black is white and whatever was white is black.
