- Have you ever been discussing a challenge with a direct report and wondered, should I jump in with my advice here or help them uncover a solution on their own? As a leader, one of your jobs is to help your team members grow professionally, and to do that effectively, you need to know when to put on your advice hat and when to put on your coach hat. In this lesson, you learn the difference between the two approaches and when to use each. I'll start by defining the two roles: advisor and coach. As an advisor, you're acting in the role of the teacher and subject matter expert, guiding the other person with ideas and recommendations. You are sharing your expertise and suggesting particular approaches to try. As a coach, you're enabling the other person to discover the solution on their own.
