Appealing to interests to increase influence
- If you truly want to influence others, you need to know what's important to them. Get curious, ask questions, pay attention and really dig deep to uncover what their priorities, needs, and pain points are? When you're connecting the dots and speaking to what matters most to them, you're priming them to want to pay attention. You're saying, "Hey, I know this is important to you, so listen up." Think about it, if you walked up to the head of IT and simply said, "Hey, I need $30,000 for this new system," what do you think the response would be? Probably, "Uh, no." But if you tailored your message based on what the head of IT cares about, it might sound more like this. "Since optimization is part of the IT strategy this year, we thought it would be great to explore upgrading our team's lagging system. I've checked and the cost is just $30,000 for a host of benefits that will help deliver strong numbers in your next quarterly update." See the difference? By speaking to what's important to them, you're making the conversation about them, not just about your needs, and when you do that, you're far more likely to get the outcome you're looking for.
