Masking overview

Having had a quick overview of the selection tools, this is a quick overview or recap of masking and masking terminology. So when we have a selection, that selection can become a layer mask, hiding the non-selected areas. A layer mask can be viewed by Option or Alt clicking on it. It can be enabled and disabled by Shift clicking on it. You can continue to work on the layer mask to edit the appearance by painting on the layer mask. A layer mask is non-destructive. The recommended approach is mask it, don't delete it. Sometimes you might want to save your selection. To do this come to the channels panel, with the selection active, click on this icon at the bottom of the channels panel. This saves the selection as an alpha channel. It's just like a layer mask but it's not specific to any layer. You can then carry on working when you need to cool it up. Hold down the Command or Control key and click on its thumbnail.
