Introduction to learning management systems (LMS)
- [Instructor] Before we begin learning how to use Moodle, let's take a second to understand what it is. Moodle is a learning management system or LMS. Learning management systems are online platforms where instructors and students can collaborate in order to improve student achievement. They allow instructors to create an online class. They can add assignments, curate resources for students to use both inside and outside of the classroom. An LMS can then help to grade these assignments and deliver quick, high quality feedback, and they allow instructors to communicate with students in a number of different ways. Essentially, learning management systems allow instructors to organize and optimize their entire course online. For students, the learning management system allows them to access their class online. They can find their class syllabus and assignments including due dates. They can find and use a wide variety of classroom resources, and they can even turn in assignments and view up-to-date grades. Also, students can use the learning management system to improve communication and collaboration with their instructor as well as with classmates. For both instructors and students, a learning management system can be used inside and outside of the classroom to help drive student achievement. Many educators are using products such as Moodle to empower students to take ownership of their learning and to allow the learning to continue beyond the walls of the classroom. This frees up time for educators to deliver more high quality feedback, which helps students attain higher levels of mastery. In the digital age, learning management systems also provide an excellent opportunity for students to improve their digital literacy skills. Let's go ahead and dive into Moodle and find out what it can do to benefit your class.
