- So the first step is to always start with the why. It's a very basic concept. Most people already do. I used to start with the why, but I didn't do it enough, and I would argue many people don't. It's more than a bullet point. It's more than a sentence. Typically, people need more time. They need to digest the reasoning behind a decision. Because to really motivate, and inspire people to change, it requires more than a carrot. It requires sometimes even more than a stick. It requires them to be ultimately aligned with why this matters. And that's one of the biggest reasons we start with the why. And we don't only tell them the why. We usually have to break it out. Why is this important to them, to that individual? Why is this important to our company? Why is this important to our customer? You have to have multiple levels of why. And then we don't also just end with our giving the explanation of why.…
