Roadside grading

- [Instructor] In this video, we're going to modify the roadside grading of an existing component road. Let's open up the RoadSide Grading model found under exercise files, six-road design. There's only two component roads in our current model. There's this one here, and the other one that intersects it. Let's focus on the one that goes North-South first. We zoom into this model, we can see that there are various components on this road. One of them is the roadside grading. You can see what the material is on either side. Now we can modify it So the grading is different depending on what side of the road you're on. So if I were to pick this model, instead of fixed with on 24 or so feet on either side of the road, I can change this to fix slope. And the first thing I'm going to do say fix slope, and I'm going to make overall it four to one. And four to one as well, there we are. Now that it's fixed slope four to one, I'll make sure both sides the fill and the cut are four to one that's what I wanted, there we are. So now we have a fixed slope. Grading limit oh I want 25 feet. Let's make sure it's 25 feet, yes. So now we have a fixed slope, either side of our component road, four to one foot cut, four to one to fill. That's what you should have right now and that's great. Now let's zoom right into our components. So we're going to look at the Eastern grade. And we can see now we can select either side, and I'm selecting on the Eastern side. And it shows here, that the cut material is blank. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to change the cut and fill material. So I'm going to change the fill material to grass. And we'll go into terrain. We'll choose grass too, and hit OK. So when my model updates, you'll notice that the grade on the Eastern side of my road is grass. Ooh we're going to change this to a five to one ratio as well. So let's change it to five to one grass. And we could even set this to a 10 foot limit, there we are. So we've got five to one and grass and 10 to one. Now the other side, I want to change that. And we're going to change the fill material, and this time we're going to use more of a gravel, so we're going to pick on gravel under terrain. So the Western side will be we'll leave it at four to one grading limit of 25 and it will be gravel once it updates you'll see that the gravel is on that side of the road. So if gravel on one side of the grade, the other side is grass. Let's modify this a little bit. Maybe there's a section closer to the road up here, that needs to be altered. So let's make a transition here. So right here, what we're going to do is we're going to split the grade. So we'll click split grading and I'll put it right about I'll make it 200 feet down so I'll type 200. That'll be the station it gets split at. So there you go so we have one side that's 154, at station 200 and another. So let's pick on the one closest to the road, this little piece right here, and instead of the grading limit 10, I'm going to put it to 20. And we'll make the slope maybe a six to one. So 20 feet six to one. But now you see that we have a six to 120 foot on this side, and just South of it, you have five to one and 10 foot. So what we need to insert here is a transition between these two grades. In order to do that we can right click and add a transition. And we could put it right here, at station 200, so I'll make sure I'll type that in 200. All may have to be further down. So let's maybe make it to 15. No, we're still a little further. So we need a bit more of a transition, we need a 16 foot transition. So let's make it say to 17, that's better. Yeah, so we're limited to how long the transition is we can't make it certain 16 feet for this particular grade. But I can't adjust it I can grab the grip here or the gizmo and stretch it out to be a little further. That's a better transition. So now we've got this 20 foot with a grade of six to one, a transition in between also grass. It's 31 foot transition. And then we've got the other grade which is 10 foot. I couldn't have a transition that had no distance so I had to put at least 16 feet there. And then I stretched it so that's what happened. So we can alter the distance too of that transition. We can move it at any time, and maybe put it at the station at exactly 230 there we go. Now we could see we started at 200 foot station and it goes to two and 230 foot station. So there we are. So we have a 30 foot transition going from one side of the grade to the other. And remember on the West side, it's all the same gravel, it's four to one and 25 foot. So we've successfully altered the grade on either side of the road and even change some of the grade on the same side of the road by leveraging the transition and splitting the grade.
