Convey a sense of urgency
- Change leader John Kotter writes that, "Change begins with a sense of urgency." You might see a need for change and others might even acknowledge it. But if there is no sense of urgency, then no one will be bothered to do anything about it. And that really brings me to an important aspect of leading change. You need to build a sense of urgency. Kotter writes that one way that you can convey urgency is to bring people in from the outside. Sometimes it's easier to ignore issues that are kept inside of the family. Some might be afraid to speak up around team members and some team members might be easily ignored. Bringing someone in from the outside will reduce the we know best culture and create a new and different voice to convey a sense of urgency. So consider bringing in someone from the outside.
