Pride and community

- For most of my career, I've tried to never make a decision based on pride. It's an emotion that is rarely rational and prompts us to respond less successfully as hoped. But there are two sides to pride. Pride is the first sin, the source of all other sins and the worst sin according to my grandmother and before her, St. Thomas Aquinas, the 13th century priest. In this definition, pride has an excessive desire for one's superiority over others and God. Then there is the type of pride centered upon accomplishments and social achievements for the community. This version is good. Pride relates to our culture and societal values. I might be proud of my collection of shrunken heads in one group while another would prefer my display of bowling trophies.
