- In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was a king condemned to roll a massive boulder up a hill, only to have it roll back down each time he neared the top. His punishment symbolized relentless struggle, endless setbacks, and the absurdity of pushing forward when the odds are against you. I was Sisyphus. That's my story after working in and around human resources for over 20 years. I struggled to be a business leader focused on driving results and also a compassionate person who genuinely wanted to help employees learn, grow and thrive. Sometimes, especially early in my career, I felt optimistic. We'd implement programs focused on employee wellbeing, development and workplace dignity, and then just like that, the market would crash, leadership would change, and we'd be back to square one. Eventually I needed a new path, so instead of rolling a boulder up a hill and being disappointed when it crashed into my face, I created a simple, practical way to keep ethics at the core of my HR decisions…
