Understanding ports and services

- An important part of ensuring that the payload of a packet reaches the application or service it's compatible with and is processed by the receiving end of a transmission is identified by a port number, typically referred to as just a port. In computing, the term port has several meanings and uses in computing. There are computer ports, which are hardware receptacles into which peripherals can fit. Another computer or another network connection can be made between these different type of ports. However, the port we are talking about is a 16 bit unsigned number value that ranges from zero to 65535. A service name and a port number are used to distinguish between different services that run on transport layer protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol or TCP, User Datagram Protocol or UDP or Datagram Congestion Control Protocol or DCCP, and the Stream Control Transmission Protocol, otherwise known as SCTP.
