- A colleague of mine never discussed his family while at work. One day, I think he slipped because he said to the team, "I need to leave early to pick up my kids from school." I didn't even know he had kids. But his sharing opened a door. Others started to communicate more about themselves. And pretty soon, we were pitching in to help one another in new ways. A more trusting connection grew and performance went up. Self-disclosure or talking about yourself and your feelings demonstrates your authenticity, and authenticity builds trust. Self-disclosure comes in many forms. Like my friend, you might share more of your non-work life stories to demonstrate your authenticity. Tell a humorous anecdote about your weekend and see how people respond. Also, share how things are going. Many feel it's appropriate at work to share their wins, but how often do you share your failures?
