Acting with empathy

- What is it like trying to get through the day when your cell phone battery life is at 18%? Do you start to shut down apps, hoping against hope that you can make it to a power source in time? When working with leaders, I offer a very simple visual. Imagine if your employees and colleagues had a little battery bar hanging above their head. Now, consider ways your interaction with that person might change if you knew their battery status. If a colleague was on red, would you still ask them about the status of a report in that moment, or would you wait? If a person is on red, instead of asking about the report, might you ask about how they're managing and whether you could help? Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others and to understand what another person is experiencing.
