The Gap Between Awareness and Understanding “To be clear, we are not yet at ‘self-improving AI’, but we are at the stage of ‘AI that improves bits of the next AI, with increasing autonomy and agency’. And a couple of years ago we were at ‘AI that marginally speeds up coders’, and a couple of years before that we were at ‘AI is useless for AI development’. Where will we be one or two years from now?” — Jack Clark, Co-Founder of Anthropic, from ImportAI 431: Technological Optimism and Appropriate Fear Jack Clark doesn’t write from the sidelines, he’s a co-founder of Anthropic, right where the next generation of AI systems is being built. His latest ImportAI piece struck a chord, not only for its insight, but for its honesty about what the rest of us “may” beginning to feel. He compared our current moment to childhood fears, when you’d lie in bed watching a shadow move in the corner of your room, convinced something was there. Then you’d turn on the light, and it turned out to be a pile of clothes swaying from the fan. Only this time, what we’re seeing is moving. Many of us in this field recognize that feeling, the subtle awareness that something is shifting on its own. The patterns are evolving faster, the systems are learning differently, and the boundary between design and emergence is becoming harder to define. ▫️ We’re not yet at self-improving AI, but we’re watching AI improve parts of itself. ▫️ We’re witnessing autonomy expand inside our tools. ▫️ We’re realizing that what once felt far away is now happening right here, right now. To hear that from someone as close to the center as Jack Clark gives it weight. This isn’t fear, it’s recognition. It’s the understanding that what once seemed imagined is now in motion, and it’s moving quickly. People should read what he wrote and draw their own conclusions. Because as the world moves faster, and as governments begin to adopt and rely on these systems, we have to ask ourselves the harder question… What’s the right answer here, and what future are we building toward? “Awareness isn’t fear, it’s preparation. The difference lies in whether we look away or look closer.” – Doug Shannon #mindsetchange #disbelief #humanfirst #trust Forbes Technology Council Gartner Peer Experiences InsightJam.com PEX Network Theia Institute VOCAL Council IgniteGTM IA FORUM SSON Intelligent Automation Community Solutions Review 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: The views within any of my posts, or newsletters are not those of my employer or the employers of any contributing experts.
