For a family-owned enterprise, the decision to hand day-to-day leadership to someone outside the family can mark a turning point. At The Beach Company, that moment has arrived. As the Charleston, S.C.-based real estate firm celebrates its 80th anniversary, it has ushered in a new era with the appointment of Daniel J. Doyle, a 21-year company veteran, as president. Doyle succeeds John Darby, grandson of founder JC Long, who will remain CEO and chairman. In doing so, Doyle becomes the first president in the company’s history not drawn from the Darby or Way families. It’s a turning point, but by no means a blind curve. “The transition was not sudden. We followed a thoughtful process set in motion decades ago,” Darby explains. “It began with Charlie Way, who mentored me with the understanding that he would eventually step down. We’ve done the same with Dan.” That planning — anchored by an independent board and a rolling five-year strategic plan — ensured a seamless handoff. “This wasn’t a surprise to anyone,” Doyle says. “The plan was well-communicated to our employees and business partners, allowing everyone to prepare and focus on the future.” https://lnkd.in/eJyq54Y2 #familybusiness
