Supporting survivors of violence, abuse, and exploitation and advocating for systemic change.

About us

Safe Horizon is the largest victim service organization in the country. Every year, 250,000 people seek safety through our services. Clients come to us following experiences of physical violence, sexual violence, community violence, emotional abuse, and exploitation. Often they have experienced multiple forms of harm, and for many, it was made worse by an institution that was supposed to protect them. Our Mission: To stand with those who have experienced violence, abuse, and exploitation. We offer unwavering support and advocate for systemic change. Our Vision: We envision a world where safety is a universal human right, and we all share a collective responsibility to protect and uphold it. We strive for a society where people are safe in their communities, homes, bodies, and minds.

  • This Thanksgiving, we're reflecting on what truly makes our community special: the amazing connections we share. We are deeply grateful for the community of survivors, staff, and supporters who share our belief that safety is a human right. Thank you to everyone who has sent a note of appreciation to our staff—we are sharing some of them here! These thank you notes reflect the support our staff provides, but the greatest honor is the opportunity to walk alongside survivors. We are privileged to serve you. Thank you to every person who gives us the opportunity to provide support and resources as you navigate your healing. We are grateful for your honesty and trust, and we remain committed to ensuring you always have access to the help you need.

    • This image is a collage of Safe Horizon staff and supporters. The top photo shows six diverse people holding signs that say "SAFETY IS A HUMAN RIGHT." In the middle, a large orange and white box overlays the image with the words "THANK YOU!" and the Safe Horizon logo. The bottom photo shows a large group of diverse staff and supporters cheering and holding banners that read "TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS" and "SAFETY IS A HUMAN RIGHT."
    • This image features three longer quotes from clients and supporters overlaid onto a background of green tree canopy and a brownstone building facade. The quotes include: "Gratitude for all of the employees at Safe Horizon for their tireless efforts and individual contribution in providing a safe haven for victims of crime and abuse...", and a note from a survivor that reads: "Your organization saved my life and the lives of my children and continuing to know you are there has kept a safety and a hope that has allowed us to come out of our situation to build a beautiful life."
    • This image features several quotes from clients and supporters overlaid onto a background of a brownstone building facade and green foliage. The thank you notes include phrases such as: "Thank You again for this life changing experience and giving me the chance to move on with strength and courage," and "Thanks for being there for me and my daughter." Other notes express thanks for help, resources, and wishing staff happy holidays.

I love this! Safe Horizon is asking donors and others to "Send a note of thanks to staff" to encourage and support them during this season of gratitude. It's great to see them asking folks to acknowledge "the people behind-the-scenes" of their work. Cheers to Hannah Collins Dana Rosenwasser Robert Dickar and the rest of the team at Safe Horizon for this great example.

  • Last week, we wrapped up the Reddit AMA with Larissa Lozada and Tamara Amoah-Awuah from our Streetwork Project. We answered questions about reducing youth homelessness, what policy barriers remain, and our hopeful plan for the new administration. Thirty young people will soon be moving into their own housing. Finding stable and safe housing is a priority for clients across all Safe Horizon programs but especially for young people experiencing housing instability and homelessness. To support this enormous milestone, we would like to provide "welcome home kits" to these young people. Each kit ideally will contain cleaning supplies, kitchen basics, and a budgeting journal. https://lnkd.in/eHZiyJf3

  • Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. We hold in our hearts the memory of every transgender and gender non-conforming life lost to violence and hatred. Their lives mattered, and their memory fuels our resolve for justice and dignity. At Safe Horizon, our commitment is unwavering: every single person—without exception—deserves to be safe, to be respected, and to live fully without fear. It is our collective responsibility to ensure a world without violence for all, and we work every day to ensure that transgender survivors and community members find the safety and justice they deserve.

New digital signage coming to a New York City Police Department stationhouse near you. The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) is groundbreaking in its scale, depth, and collaborative framework. CVAP places two Safe Horizon advocates — one specializing in domestic violence, the other serving victims of all other crimes — in all 77 precincts and nine Police Service Areas citywide.

  • Safety is a human right. We believe that together, we can build a New York City where every person is safe in their community, home, body, and mind.  That's why we’re sharing our recommendations, the Safety is a Human Right Agenda, with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. We're ready to partner with his administration to push for a future where housing, justice, and safety systems truly work for survivors. Read our full recommendations in the comments!

Key systems must place survivors at the center. 2. Survivor voices must lead the city's community safety strategy. 3. All survivors deserve a safe place to stay and a pathway to permanent safety. 4. All New Yorkers deserve to be safe. 5. Economic stability is safety.
